Storm toll in New York reaches over sixty as residents endure harsh conditions. Officials report casualties while communities brace for recovery efforts and continued outages across hard hit areas.
The trial in Waukegan opened its fifth day with the state presenting evidence on an alleged public funds misappropriation linked to Governor Small. The prosecution expects to complete its case this week, with three weeks for the defense and a final week for arguments.
A violent hurricane like storm hit New York City and City Island on June 11 12 causing at least twenty four deaths. Drowning and wreckage flooded docks and parks with hundreds missing and thousands affected. Ferris wheel collapse and uprooted trees left severe property losses across Manhattan and the Bronx.
Astoria defeated Bardolph and Crabb 2 to 1 in a brisk Sunday contest powered by the pitching prowess of both flingers. The lineup features Brown Landis Harmon Wilzer Switzer Hy Tarmon Landis, with Switzer at short and Tarmon in right field. Peoria June 12 Patrolman McGarry made a record arrest, single handed, charging 13 men gathered around a street phonograph on Martin near Allen. The crowd serenaded an unknown girl as he moved in, arrested them without resistance, and the detainees sang together at the station.
American Legion local post holds its regular meeting this evening. A report on carnival proceeds will be presented and other business transacted.
County court heard objections to tax payments by the Burlington and T P W railroads and the Illinois Central subdivision. Most objections were sustained with several parts of town and school taxes upheld while others were overruled or continued to June seventeenth. Attorneys Gumbart Grigs and the State’s Attorney Hainline presented for the county.
Members of the club will dance at the country club house on Wednesday evening enjoying an organized social event with music and refreshments.
Chas Coleman of South McArthur street fell from a cherry tree at his home sustaining a fractured hip. He was taken to the Macomb clinic for X rays by Dr W M Hartman and later moved to St. Reish hospital for treatment.
The W. B. M. society of the Christian church will meet at the church Tuesday afternoon at 2 30. The note stresses a very important meeting and the desire for every member to attend. The item hints at interest in music beyond the tambourine.
The good roads bureau of the Commercial Association will seek ownership of the vacated road north of town through relocation of a new hard read cutting off part of the old road from the cemetery to S hill. Permission was granted for a conference with the board of supervisors, led by Supervisor Fred Knight. The road between the two points is considered an orphan as the state and others do not claim it. The old road was bypassed when a new direct eastward road was laid out. The board met for its regular quarterly session and recessed for committee work later in the day.
Federal Prohibition Agent Gus O Nations and his squad seized 160 cases of Canadian Club bonded whisky at St Louis yards at 6 p.m. The whisky was en route from Canada to Mexico via Wabash and Cotton Belt railways and valued at about $85 000.
The Louisiana Red Devils of Louisiana Missouri will host a jitney dance at Holmes Park on Wednesday evening. The orchestra comes highly recommended and with summer school in session an unusually large crowd is expected.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Webs of Jefferson Street city are the parents of a boy born Saturday evening at Holmes Hospital. The child was named Max Weston.
Two carloads of road oil ordered for Macomb’s 32 blocks have not arrived. The county road oiler is digging at Colchester and won’t finish until tomorrow night. If oil arrives as planned, blocks will be oiled in order. insufficient oil may omit the final block.
