Meat production declines by four million pounds in six months

The Institute of Meat Packers reports a four million pound drop in U S meat production over the last six months versus last year based on 2 5 million fewer cattle hogs and sheep slaughtered at 69 markets. Prices for hogs and pork are lower as exports shrink and producers cut herds, risking longer term shortages and higher consumer prices. June beef steer prices in Chicago reach near wartime highs at 14.05.

Compromise on RR Men's Wages by Board

Chicago July 20 six hundred million dollars were added to the pay envelopes of the nations two million railroad workers in the first award by the United States Railroad Labor Board. The board approved about 60 percent of the unions demand for increases totaling near one billion. The decision raises about 21 percent of current pay. Leaders of sixteen unions and 1 000 chairmen convene to discuss acceptance as union presidents defer comment pending referendum.

Bridges and Culverts Progress Amid Slow Road Work

County highway crews under W M Bonham continue upgrades from the city to Colchester and other routes. South Bethel township gains an eleven mile stretch from Fandon with a three week plan, weather permitting. Five of eight Bethel culverts near the Stone King store are done, with more grading underway and bridge work to be let in Eldora do New Salem Mound Macomb Sciota and Blandinsville at an estimated eight thousand dollars.
