The Macomb public schools plan mid year promotions next Friday and start the new semester Monday January 17 with age changes allowing six year olds into first grade under certain rules. The current enrollment nears 1250. Washington Jan 7 A Senate military committee vote orders the secretary of war to stop army enlistments until the total falls to 175000. The measure, pushed by Senator New Republican of Indiana, seeks to curtail manpower as the force is trimmed.
High school basketball players from Maple City head to Monmouth for an away game tomorrow evening aiming for another win. Coach Wilson expects the team to bring home the bacon after last year’s defeats in both contests.
Mr and Mrs F C Young aged sixty were found dead in Monmouth today from asphyxiation. They had retired with gas lights lit and the gas jet was left open during company repairs. The open jet caused their deaths.
No further word arrives on the fate of William A. Hoerris. C TL Harris reports Bangor lay under deep snow and thick ice, making any search futile until conditions improve and the mystery may be solved.
Associated Press reports from Lexington Kentucky dated January 7 show resolutions passed by representative farmers from Kentucky Indiana and Ohio mandating no barley tobacco production in 1921. Tobacco sales floors will stay closed for an indefinite period if these resolutions are carried out.
Attorney for Newberry argues in open court that the conviction for conspiracy to violate the corrupt practices act is a gross misinterpretation. He vows to present abundant examples to illustrate the alleged enormity of the ruling as the appeal proceeds in Washington.
A Japanese colonist arriving in Brownville Texas is met by a coalition of the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Retail Merchants' Association and farmers' groups and ordered to depart within 48 hours. In California the Senate passes a resolution urging the national government to reject treaties with Japan that would undermine anti alien land laws or grant citizenship to Japanese.
President elect Harding endorses Senate resolution ordering the secretary of war to stop enlistments until the army is reduced to 175,000 with a further cut to 150,000 next year. Representative Kahn of California announced after meeting Harding.
Through its embassy in Washington France formally notified the United States of a contemplated invasion of the Ruhr valley in response to what Paris calls Germanys failure to achieve disarmament in that district. The notice was issued January 7 and signals French intent to act without delay to secure the region.
Generous contributions from Colchester residents and nearby farms enable the board of education to keep the high school operating as regular funds are exhausted. A committee has been seeking funds to support the school and rever, pending further assistance.

With Colchester high school feared closed for lack of funds, teachers were allowed to seek other jobs. Earl Wilson, principal, has moved to Macomb schools to fill Sommers vacancy, prompting a new hire.
Refreshments followed a successful installation of the I O O F Encampment officers for the coming year. Officers named include C P W I Savidgé, H P Ralph Birdsell, S W J M Randolph, J W William House, Secy W I Knowles, Treas D C Nell, and ward and guard positions with names such as Clem Ivenagle and Thurman Roberson.
County Clerk and Arrs John G Norton receive a letter from their son John Jr who has studied music in Chicago and has been chosen as a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A prior letter said his violin teacher arranged a trial to fill the vacancy, signaling his musical talent.
Mrs L N Rost of South Lafayette Street notes the marriage of Allen Dale Eby and Miss Ruth Heinermier on January 1 at the bride's Plymouth Wisconsin home. The couple will reside after January 10 in Princeton Indiana where the groom grew up. Eby taught in Macomb High School about three years ago and recently left reading law in Indianapolis to take a county post in Princeton.
The social and dance at St. Paul’s School hosted by the ladies of St. Rita’s Guild drew a large attendance last evening. Guests enjoyed cards and dancing and the ladies announced the event will become a weekly affair.
Miss Dorothy Bacon hosted a skating party at Holmes rink last evening with guests enjoying the evening. Later they attended the social at St Pauls seat.
After weeks of worry the Price family learns that William Clarence Price 17 of Cottonwood near Bardolph is safe. In a letter from Camp Travis Texas he explains he enlisted with a 4th Battery 15th Field Artillery and regrets leaving home. He left Macomb after visiting a friend and storing his car at Macomb Motor Sales.
S A Thompson of the Commercial association asked Mayor Flack to hire a man on the square to keep it clean through winter. The city and the merchants will share the salary. Wm Vawter was placed on the job and will try to have the square presentable by tomorrow night.
