A suspect confessed to theft after initial denial, detailing an early morning break in at a residence. Items valued around 68 dollars were taken including a fountain pass and other small goods. The accused, linked to prior trouble and checks, awaits justice court proceedings.
Government gauge readings show Macomb drenched in 39.77 inches in 1921, the year trailing only 1915 for rainfall. September led with 8.76 inches while February was driest at 0.22 inch.
Glen Casner a 17 year old Bardolph resident was badly burned after falling into a boiling scalding tank at the Landis slaughter house while reaching for a knife. He suffered severe burns to the head neck and shoulders and one arm with his ear burned. he was removed to his home after treatment and may recover.
The comptroller of the currency issued a call for the condition of all national banks at the close of business on Saturday December 31. The state auditor also issued a call for the condition of all state banks at the close of business on December 31.
The notice records a license to wed for Ernest Juneman Adair and Helen V Heffner, indicating a marriage intent in New Salem.
Bushnell Post of the American Legion staged three fast bouts in the sales pavilion to open what may be a series of exhibitions. Referee W. F. Tichner satisfied the crowd as McCammon faced Ward in a lively four round curtain-raiser, a draw with Ward showing speed. Burns met Cawley in a semi-windup draw with Cawley’s speed and precision edging Burns. Rudy battled Burke in the main event eight rounds with Burke leading early and late rounds producing draws and decisive KOs avoided.
Dublin January 8 The Dail Eireann reconvenes after a holiday recess and resumes sharp debate on the Anglo Irish treaty. Leaders clash over Griffiths ratification and De Valera alternatives. A Thursday vote is anticipated as supporters defend the pact and opponents urge change. Pierce Beasley argues the treaty secures Ireland’s gains while Countess Markiewicz denounces it.
Springfield reports the constitutional convention split over procedure as it reconvened after a recess. Cook county delegates pressed for a showdown on the legislative article while downstate members debated a possible further recess until January 31. The central issue is limitation of Cook county representation in the legislature.
M. C. Higgins of Calexico California visits at the home of his sister Mrs. W. H. Sexton. Higgins is a former resident of the city and arrived after Bo Stander ads noted.
Chicago January 3 Wheat prices dropped sharply in late dealings with losses up to seven and a half cents a bushel. May wheat slipped to 1.07 1 2 and July to 97 3 4 cents as the market extended its downward momentum in the final hour of trading.
Statements of the condition of Macomb banks at the close of business Saturday December 31 show banks in unusually strong condition. Year end deposits are nearly normal, indicating a robust financial condition of the community.
Clyde Welch of Avon and Carl Rodgers of Bushnell, both ex servicemen, were examined yesterday by Dr. T. A. Wayland, government physician and surgeon. Welch likely to be sent to Chicago for observation and Rodgers expected to undergo an operation there.
Fire destroyed the home of William McDonough two miles southwest of Tennessee. Mrs. McDonough was alone, locked inside, and escaped through a broken door as heat and flames overwhelmed the kitchen. Only one rocking chair was saved. insurance is expected to cover the loss. Fire seen near the Russell Wyckoff place around 9 30 this morning.
A single story frame home owned by LeRoy Leighty near Adair was destroyed by fire between 6:00 and 6:30 AM on Monday. The blaze started from a flue spark while Leighty lit the kitchen stove. Insurance covered 1500 on the house and 700 on contents, much clothing and belongings lost. Mrs. Leighty and two children awoke after neighbor Roy Coyner phoned. Firefighters arrived late and modern equipment might have helped curb spread.
Macomb independents beat the Adair independents 37 to 11 last night in the Adair community high school gym. Lineups include Macomb Williams center Swanson Yaap forwards J Snyder McCutcheon guards and Adair Sherman Bryan center James Rutledge Ferris Harlan forwards Everett Jones Ferrill Aten guards.
H. L. Miller marks the 59th anniversary of the Stone River battle noting he fought in the three day fight and recalls the occasion today as a bystander memory.
A morning blaze starting in the rear of the Garrison garage, likely from a work backfire, consumed the garage and the adjacent C. H. Price & Company store in Industry. Losses range from 60000 to 75000 dollars with most contents lost. Only a few cars escaped. Insurance may cover over half the damage. The fire destroyed newer buildings from 1918, with the garage owner facing insured amounts of about 28000.
Washington January 3 Senator Watson of Indiana predicts Governor Sproul of Pennsylvania will resign to be appointed successor to the late Senator Penrose who died Saturday night at his home in Philadelphia Observers say Penrose was last of the old guard and party dominance may shift westward.
