In Abingdon farmer J Arthur Routh near Hermon raised a single vine with fifty one pumpkins. The vine yielded more than a ton of fruit, the largest pumpkin weighed fifty six and a half pounds, with an average around forty pounds each.
About 85 couples join the Athletic Association for a benefit dance at Holmes Park last night. Final receipts from advance ticket sales are not yet tallied, but organizers expect at least 35 dollars to be cleared.

Mrs Chas Bridges of Industry entered the hospital for treatment and operation. Mildred Bugler of Rushville who had an appendicitis operation several days ago is recovering nicely. Mrs Wm Mariner and babe of Prairie City are getting along nicely. Mrs David Fife of Macomb is recovering nicely following an operation a few days ago. Mrs Charles Long of LaHarpe under treatment is getting along nicely. Bertha Cale of this city under treatment for an infected arm returned home today.
William N. Covert, dean of Adams county lawyers, dies at his home 1433 Vermont street at 9 AM after a week of bronchitis and pneumonia. The Quincy, Tennessee, notice states he had fallen ill two weeks earlier with a severe cold.
Clarence Bly formerly of this city now resident of Roseville is ill at Monmouth hospital with an underarm abscess. He was expected to undergo an operation today or tomorrow.
Local agent W R Shores paid Fred Mc Kee one dollar ten cents yesterday on a health and accident policy carried by the company represented by Shores. The transaction is noted in the By Stander advertisement.
Mrs. Mary Smith of Bardolph observed her 97th birthday Tuesday as children gather at her home. Four sons T and J C of this city A G and J G Smith of Bardolph attend with families. She remains hearty with 40 grandchildren 41 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Industry inventor Wim L Myers hotel landlord awaits patent for his wire safety latch.
Dublin announces that ratification of the Anglo Irish agreement would prompt crown forces to leave Ireland within a month. The report suggests Japan recognizes a need for arms to gain elbow room and references advertising content from The By Stander.
New York December 8 Thirty crew members of submarine 48 sank off Bridgeport last night were brought to New York Navy Yard for observation. Many were overcome by chlorine gas. three including Commander Lieutenant Adams Smith were in serious condition. The submarine sank in 80 feet of water and remained submerged nearly 12 hours before escaping through torpedo tubes. They were picked up by a tanker. Most crew members were Bridgeport Lake Submarine Boat Company employees. The craft was 98 percent complete.
National Educational Week was observed at the high school with invited Legion speakers. Rev. Dr. W. T. Rodgers addressed students on Making A Good American as the school, led by Miss Teressa Holden, sang Keep The Home Fires Burning The Star Spangled Banner and America.
Attorney Russell Bolin, long a backer of Governor Small, was appointed to the state industrial commission. The move stirred local speculation that Bolin’s appointment signaled a political win for Small in McDonough County amid recent patronage tensions.
