An evening concert at the Mendelssohn Music Club features Tauqua tomorrow after a tonight recital by the same group. The program includes selections from classical composers with emphasis on notable orchestral works.
Sunday marks the final day of the Macomb Chautauqua with a packed program. Walter Aitkin of Ur, a Scotch speaker, replaces Dr De Baker for the vesper service, and the lineup features the Issom Musical Club, the Grove Opera Company, and the Van Grove Company with famous selections from The Messiah and Requiem.
The By-Stander reports controversy over a Danville Illinois American Legion adjutant and the use of the group for political aims. The post elected an alternate delegate to the state convention, while the Legion asserts it remains nonpartisan and that members may engage in politics to improve government, provided officers do not seek public office simultaneously.
A county commission led by County Judge Chas. I. Imes and including County Supt. B. E. Decker and County Clerk John G. Norton denied a petition by residents of district 74 east of Bardolph to withdraw from Bardolph Community High School district. The district 74 petition sought to remain in non high school territory.
A fragment notes Ally, now married, had been divorced from her former husband. It mentions a charivari at the bride's home and a brief reference to Mrs Rodgers visiting Sequanora Charlevoix Michigan and Dr Radvorg filling the venue at a Presbyterian church service.
Dan Pelt of East Washington Street measured stalks in an acre of corn on his farm and found one plant at 145 inches tall with a 12 foot high stalk and another just an inch shorter. The corn was planted June 7 and bears two good ears.
Sugar is forecast to sell for 10 or 11 cents per pound by January 1, 1921, as city officials report findings from the high cost of living committee. In other items, real estate dealer Frank Logan sold P. C. Campbell’s property on South McArthur Street to Mr. Twaddle of Bethel Township for $4000.

The freighter Superior City sank after colliding with the Willis L. King in Lake Superior near White Fish Point. Twenty nine people are believed lost, including a woman wife of the second engineer. Captain Edward Sawyer survived with three others. Walter Richter is seriously injured. The alarm was raised two minutes before impact.
Paris reports French military circles say Polish independence is assured after a string of victories against Russia. Bolshevik retreat cited with heavy losses. Moscow wireless cites complete, inviolable independence demanded by Poland. In Minsk talks the Polish delegation states their terms. Warsaw reports 15,000 Soviet prisoners captured through Thursday.
Three days of demonstrations drew 183 attendees across the county. An unscheduled session at Thomas Baugardner's home was followed by visits to farms with Farm Adviser Donoghue and the expert instruction.
Metz, Alsace Lorraine August 2 The Lafayette statue dedicated by the Knights of Columbus of America was unveiled today by Supreme Knight James Flaherty of Philadelphia. It stands on an eminence overlooking the valley of the Messe and honors the memory of the Republic of France and the fallen.
The Elgin national road race scheduled for today at noon is postponed for a week because of rain.
In broad daylight two men seized a mail pouch at the One Hundred and Eleventh Street station of the Illinois Central railroad. The bag contained bills likely totaling $100,000 destined for the Pullman Bank to cash checks for the Pullman Company and the Sherwin Williams factory. A 13 year old watched the bag briefly before an elderly man distracted him and aided the theft as an automobile sped away.
John L. Lewis president of the United Mine Workers telegraphed President Wilson that danger of a winter strike by central competitive field soft coal miners was believed averted after the Cleveland conference of operators and miners. He said differences could be harmonized by agreements in the states. Operators said the sides were hopelessly deadlocked as miners rejected a commission plan.
Clyde Vincent and his wife and young Maurice returned to Macomb township Friday after a several days visit with Chicago relatives. Vincent sent a carload of stock to Chicago earlier in the week. The Rev Dr W T Rodgers left for Licking Missouri to be with his seriously ill father J B Rodgers, aged 82, who has been ill since Monday and may not recover, having suffered a broken hip for over a year.
Mr and Mrs Wiliam Murray and Mr and Mrs Guy Murray of Emmet township left Thursday afternoon for Peoria by air for a short business and pleasure trip.
Returned home Mr and Mrs H M Ruffner of New Florence Pa who had been visiting at J B Ruffner s home and with other relatives left this morning for their home.
Coroner Russler presided inquest at Mrs Sarah Danley's West Jackson Street home after her death at 77. Witnesses testified heart trouble caused by illness while her son Frank found her body. Jury returned verdict of death from angina and heart trouble. Survived by three children and longtime city resident. Funeral plans pending.
