Floodwaters from the Mississippi flood rise over Beardstown and nearby towns in Illinois. Families are moved to higher ground while boats replace rail and road transport as public services and Salvation Army aid distribute ice heaters and supplies.
Tornado swept western and central Indiana and Illinois with Ohio storms. Early tallies report twenty eight dead, over three hundred injured, and million-dollar property losses. Illinois towns Irvington Plainfield wrecked as rural areas hit. Other fatalities in Indiana and Ohio noted as crews repair downed wires and recover missing persons.
Tommy Cannon trains daily at the Arcade gym Chicago with Johnnie Meyers ahead of tomorrow night’s bout with Paul Prehn from Urbana. Prehn, interallied champion from Champaign, completes a two month strenuous regimen in Urbana. Arena seats six hundred plus standing room. prelims feature McGuire versus Zachmeyer, then Fisher versus Koho in a two of three falls format.
Organizers of the Genoa conference seek a path through confusion after the secret Russo German peace treaty at Rapallo. Delegates from thirty four nations debate the treaty’s effect and its compatibility with Versailles and Cannes resolutions. Paris reports Allies drafting a note that Germany and Russia cannot continue in the Russian affairs commission if the treaty remains in force.
In Beardstown Illinois on April 17 two flood victims were rescued from a tree top after their boat capsized hours earlier. Grover Dodds age 22 and J Li Lower a farmer were found nearly exhausted from exposure.
Relatives received notice from Mr and Mrs I B Rhodes of East Peoria that they have moved from their East Peoria home as high water threatens to breach the levee and flood the residence district. Mrs Rhodes is sister of Mrs Harry Conelly of Macomb. They formerly lived at Colchester.
In East Peoria families forced to flee crowded the night vigil as a weakening dike faced a possible rupture. With the river near 24.7 feet and winds pounding the earthen wall, residents feared dawn would bring more flooding and ruin to their homes.
Liverpool April 17 Flood waters have overflowed vast bottom lands forcing snakes from their hiding places. A young man was attacked yesterday while picking flowers as a large snake charged him in the woods. The woods reportedly abound with displaced snakes seeking new cover.
New York April 17 John McCormack the tenor ill from a throat affection continued to improve today according to physicians with his condition described as much better and stable.
Washington reports the Senate Republicans endorsed passing a soldier bonus bill this session by a 36 to 9 vote in conference. They urged Finance Committee to report a bill soon while also planning to take up the administration tariff bill next Tuesday. Opposing views cited include Mellon and President Harding against a bonus lacking a general sales tax.
The Illinois Theatre orchestra conducted by Harold Frank will present a morning program at the Teachers' College chapel tomorrow. The concert includes light and popular numbers with solo and duet performances and selections from Verdi and Mendelssohn.
Arthur Moon of West Adams street was cited for speeding on East Jackson street Sunday afternoon. He paid a fine and costs totaling 1649 dollars in Justice Ralston's court after arrest by Chief of Police Purdum.
The largest collection reported for Macomb's Sunday schools for Foster was $200 at the M B E church where 700 attended. The men's class gave about $50 and the ladies contributed somewhat more than that.
Members of the Macomb Country Club will meet Thursday at 7 36 PM at the Commercial Association to consider establishing a gun club. President Stondard will preside and discuss the ALP proposal.
