The Colchester community faces a heated dispute this week as the school board weighs the establishment and placement of a new Community High, with court actions and local meetings delaying decisions. With Major Chipperfield he represents Chas B Eshelman in a $13 000 alienation of affections judgment against Rawalt. A roses laden desk in the governors chamber marks the day.
Property transfers reported include the sale of a West Jefferson street residence by the Asher sisters to Mrs Hall of Colchester and a North State street property sold by William Carver to Mrs William Kelley, with dealings conducted through G. B. Hillyer.
Macomb board of education adopted a new fixed salary scale for junior high and grade school teachers while senior high instructors keep salaries set by the board. Names and salaries of hires include J I Lynch 8300 and E B Freshwater 3000 with primary and grade teachers listed from 1100 to 1200 plus several staff in sixth through senior high levels.
McDonough county circuit court convenes May 9 with grand jurors to report and petit jurors to follow on May 16. New cases include Moon vs James partition and Valentine vs Davis foreclosure. Four divorce petitions cite drunkenness cruelty cruelty and desertion. Names span Colchester Bushnell Macomb and area towns with numerous local residents listed.
The Bushnell fair will be held on August 23 24 25 and 26. The fair grounds will be used this year but future events will be barred due to the new tuberculosis sanitarium occupying the site.
Washington April 15 Frank White of Valley City North Dakota was nominated by President Hardine to be treasurer of the United States The report notes a city population mix up with Quincy mistakenly listed as 75 000 but corrected to about 36 000
Frank Lowhone, condemned for the Nottingham farmer murder, was publicly hanged at 9:05 am near the scene of the crime. He was baptized beforehand and spoke only I am sorry as he walked to the scaffold, witnessed by a large crowd and his elderly mother.
Sam Cardinella the gang leader, and Joseph Costanzo with Salvatora Ferrera, convicted of murder, were hanged in Chicago. Cardinella fainted twice en route to the platform delaying the other two executions by about 20 minutes. Ferrera spoke briefly in Italian. Costanzo showed little emotion.
Miss Beulah Graves has requested to discontinue their By-Stander after April 15 as they start home that date. Graves and Mrs. Wm. Kline spent the winter in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Sunday school class of the Methodist church will hold a bakery sale at J W Thrasher's hardware store on Saturday. All items for a good Sunday dinner will be available.
London reports a split in the triple alliance as miners refuse to reopen talks and railway men plus transport workers cancel their scheduled strike. Lloyd George announced miners would resume negotiations, though alliance members must approve, while Hodges allegations sparked the rift.
