New Auditor General Promises Quiet Watchdog Role in Canada
Canada’s new Auditor General James Macdonell vows a less confrontational approach, aiming to curb waste by quiet internal dealings rather than public clashes. He follows former AG Maxwell Henderson who criticized the Treasury Board but saw little impact. Meanwhile Darcy McKeough returns to Ontario cabinet, boosting morale as cabinet reshuffle speculation grows amid a year of resignations and byelections.

Turkey and Chicken Prices Rise in Saskatchewan Markets
Saskatchewan producers will face about five cents more per pound for turkey and two cents more per pound for chicken. The Saskatchewan Turkey Producers Marketing Board boosted producer prices by two and a half cents per pound, effective Tuesday, while the Broiler Chicken Marketing Board raised producer prices by half a cent. Officials linked the increases to higher feed wheat costs and Manitoba's decision to raise feed wheat to 9.50 dollars a bushel.

Newfoundland Hospitals Hire UK Nurses To Ease Shortage
Newfoundland hospitals import registered nurses from the United Kingdom on three month contracts to cover the annual summer shortage. St Johns General hired 30 nurses as local staff quit for vacations or move elsewhere. Hospitals consider closing beds as a result and look at other countries such as the Philippines for help. About 200 Filipinos are already in Newfoundland in medical, nursing, and teaching roles. Outport shortages persist due to social isolation. Nurses in outport cottages earn 5180 to 7512 dollars yearly plus a 50 dollar monthly allowance for remoter settlements. Health Minister Gus Rowe notes over 600 registered doctors in the province for the first time, with Memorial University’s medical school graduating 22 in June. Future classes may total 50-60 doctors yearly once the health sciences centre opens. Fall admissions: 57 accepted from 871 applicants, including 46 Newfoundlanders. High turnover remains as many foreign physicians depart after a few years, with about 100 doctors leaving over the past three years.
