Stubble Burning Practice Is Being Questioned

Two Manitoba extension agronomists launched a demonstration trial to test if burning stubble lowers yields and soil health and increases tillage drag. They split 36 acres donated by Sid Cardy into six acre plots with varying treatments including post harvest burn off, soil incorporation, continuous cropping, andsummer fallow. Early results show burned plots yielded slightly higher this year, but researchers expect yields to fall as testing continues and plan compaction tests to assess tillage power and fuel needs.
