Schreyer laments lack of consensus on unemployment goal
Premier Ed Schreyer complained at an Ottawa airport news conference that participants in the federal provincial conference failed to agree on a target of no more than three percent unemployment. He warned that persistent unemployment threatens national unity as effectively as Quebec separatism. He noted limited accord on equalization payments and estate taxes, with emphasis on preserving essential services in the Maritimes. The conference did advance approval for provinces to explore alternative health programs including nursing and home care.
