Benson tells provinces they must raise their own taxes

Finance Minister Benson told the provinces at a federal provincial finance ministers meeting that they have the power and responsibility to raise their own personal income and corporate taxes. He outlined Ottawa’s offer to give more taxing room if provinces assume full responsibility for hospital insurance, old age pension supplements, and general health grants. The redacted paper argues provinces remain accountable to electors and that Ottawa will not seek higher revenue from provinces, while noting existing provincial revenue tools and that two provinces currently levy higher income taxes.
