Schreyer Defends Manitoba Budget In Parliament
Premier Ed Schreyer entered the Manitoba budget debate defending his administration against opposition attacks. He criticized Conservative leader Sidney Spivak and Liberal house leader Gordon Johnston as poor analysts and noted opposition figures relied on an Asper led plan. Schreyer likened Asper to Don Quixote and Johnston to Sancho Panza, said Manitoba’s economy remains relatively strong with lower unemployment than most provinces. He disputed claims of a civil service increase and backed welfare review while urging cost controls. Ferguson urged tighter welfare procedures and Sherman dismissed the budget as lacking policy details. He also suggested examining a steel industry and Manitoba’s role in the supersonic transport era.
