Indians Stand By Promised Land Amid Alberta Move
An elderly Indian chief Robert Smallboy vows to fight a provincial act limiting public camping on crown land after leading 143 band members from the Erminskin reserve in 1968 to Mukiki Lake area. He seeks title to 72 square miles and plans to settle despite schooling and employment changes. The group lives in tents with family units, avoids gambling, drinking, and drugs, and relies on federal aid.

Gimli Base Take-over Possible by September First
Industry Minister Leonard Evans said the Gimli air base could be taken over by September 1 with a five year operating subsidy from Ottawa. The plan envisions turning the former base into an industrial park while preserving facility operations until self-sustaining. The sale price may be nominal and incentives for new industries could apply.

Only Three PCs Left In Quebec
Quebec has only three Progressive Conservative members in the House of Commons after the resignation of Roc Lasalle of Joliette who will sit as an independent. Lasalle said in a telegram to Robert Stanfield that he deplored Conservative destitution on constitutional policy and that the resignation was irrevocable. Tom Sloan stated Stanfield’s office had tried to contact Lasalle repeatedly without success and that there would always be a place for Quebecers in the party.
