Crowds thinning after heavy rain, roads flooded and crops under water. Old schoolhouse stands silent as memories return for former pupils. Strawberries and Saskatoons abundant, McIntosh home torn down, Orange men march, and a big attraction at Portage Fair ends with Matt Little, a picture set to run next week.
Image Creek residents share family visits and travels with several helpers and relatives. Miss E Pogue received a call from Hull Quebec Mrs A Pogue spent the weekend in Winnipeg and Kenora. Mr A Puhulak of Winnipeg visited the Ritchie home last week. Miss Fer Allan of Edwin visits cousin Merlyn Pogue. Mr and Mrs A J Rutherford and family spent the past week in Portage. Beverley Pogue visited relatives Mr and Mrs C Charlton of Treherne. Sympathy offered to Mr and Mrs Ernie Smith in bereavement. S H McLachlan and Mr and Mrs W Brown and Betty McLachlan of MacGregor drove to Clear Lake last week.
Pratt district reports three drownings after a Model A truck crossing the Rae’s Ferry ramp failed to stop and plunged into the Assiniboine River. Victims: Mrs Willis Graham 22 and her week old daughter Linda Jane, Edwin Welker a neighbor. Graham and his brother attempted rescue but currents thwarted efforts. Police and local clergy note ongoing river danger.
Post Master Frank Hay received a letter from Three Hills Alberta seeking any information on Mr. and Mrs. David Brown who may have farmed near MacGregor or run a store here. The note says Mrs Brown was born Hollingshead and of German origin. If older residents recall these people they are asked to contact Postmaster Hay.
Arthur Smith of Bagot District died in Portage General Hospital on July 13 at 79 years 11 months 29 days. He was born near Burton Ontario July 14 1876 and farmed in Bagot since 1895. Survived by three sons Ernest Clarence Burton, a brother Harry, and two grandchildren. Funeral July 17 at Bagot Hall with Temple Lodge AF AM MacGregor and Beaver Creek Community Club paying tributes. Interment Beaver Cemetery.
After the evening service, long-time church members Lil and Mitchell Hay announced their weekend departure for a home in British Columbia. Struthers read a farewell address as Mrs. D. A Shaw and others presented gifts including two travelling cases an eight day clock an electric tile and a wallet. Mitchell served on the church session and Lil as a WMS past member, both deeply involved in church work and personal outreach.
Watchter posters announce an auction of high class furniture and household effects from the estate of Mrs Ellen Parker. The sale is at the residence opposite Dr Jubb's home on Saturday the 29th at 1 30 o’clock. F C Borton and Co, auctioneers.
The July 13 deaths include William Clapham aged 65 years 10 months and 1 day at Portage General Hospital after months of declining health. Born in North Rigton England he married Jane Wilkinson in Winnipeg and farmed in Rae and Pratt districts. He is survived by his wife a daughter Mary and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Sidney Anglican Church with burial at Sidney Cemetery. A second obituary covers Henry Edgeworth aged 79 of Katrime who died July 9 at Portage la Prairie General Hospital after a short illness. Born in Macking Ireland he moved to Canada and married Maria Armstrong. He leaves a widow son, daughter and grandchildren. Funeral July 11 at Katrime Community Hall with interment in Katrime Cemetery. The column ends noting Lake of the Woods and Pool Elevators will close Saturday afternoons beginning July 22.

Winnipeg police detective Ted Sims died from gunshot wounds sustained during a Sunday morning attack. The top-ranking city detective, 35, survived by his wife Gertrude Langley and three children, with funeral services held with police honors.
Beaver News item notes Walker and sisters visiting Portage over the holiday. Winnipeg visitors Mr. and Mrs. Tom Sinney call on M. Smith. Sympathies extended to relatives of Arthur Smith and Ted Sims. Vivian Telford visits from Winnipeg for summer school, then Toronto trip. Funeral attendance for Ted Sims mentioned with local family members.
In the Central Manitoba Association Southern Division playoffs MacGregor split two games with Shilo. MacGregor won the first game at home, Murray pitched the opener and Gerald Cobbe finished. Vic Palmer excelled behind the plate with ten putouts.
George Snaith’s lineup sparks Shilo victory over Carberry 8 to 5 in the second game of the semi finals at MacGregor. Donnelly Shilo’s pitcher fights, with Cobbe and Gerald Cobb holding the mound briefly. Murray Collins homers but can’t turn the tide. Third game underway as the series continues with Shilo as a contender.
The Herald will close for a week from July 28 to August 5 to give staff time off. No issue will be published August 3 and operations resume August 7. Correspondents and advertisers should note the dates and place urgent printing orders ahead of departure.
