Austin Recreation Committee Reports Active Year in 1970

The Austin Recreation Committee annual meeting at Sprucedale school notes a very active year. Highlights include a $300 government grant for youth programs and leadership training, eight youths at Carman Youth Conference, talks of a Drop-In Centre, and leadership camps in Gimli for Karen Christofferson Elsie Carruthers Lester Rand Laurie Stewart Lereen Aman Vi Doucette Mildred McMillan. Senior citizens enjoyed a Paddle Wheel Queen cruise. a July swimming class at Jackson's Lake enrolled 90 from nearby towns under a Red Cross instructor. a new figure skating committee formed. Treasurer shows $141.25 on hand with $25 donated to Sprucedale. Retiring members Hartley Robinson and Loreen Aman thanked. After the final village council meeting of 1970 retiring councillor A. E. Chant received a silver tray engraved with his name and years of service. Mayor Lye presented the item, and Mr. Chant thanked the council and wished them well for the future.

Rural Debenture Issue Sold In North Norfolk

The RM of North Norfolk sold 62300 in debentures for the Austin water system project. Debentures run 19 years at 8.15 percent with annual principal and interest payments. The Austin Credit Union purchased 52000, and 10000 were bought by three individuals.

Temple Lodge Elects Officers for New Year

Brandon Rink Wins Novelty Bonspiel

Brandon Rink leads a Brandon rink to victory at the MacGregor Curling Club novelty bonspiel held December 26 and 27. Ken McLean’s Brandon foursome defeated Ken Green Linda Heselwood Rob ert Rodgers and Don Davidson in the final, with David Booth group and Ken Larson group earning top placements. Thirty rinks competed in the event.

Homecoming Celebrations Light Up MacGregor Centenary

Manitoba centennial year events in MacGregor feature curling novelty bonspiel finals won by the Ken McLean four some from Brandon and Jim Kelly’s rink capturing the second title. Sunday brought hockey, snowmobile rides, a large Homecoming tea, a pot luck supper, speeches by Gerald Cobbe and Gordon Johnston, and a midnight frolic.

Chamber of Commerce Seeks Citizen of the Year Nominees

The Chamber will receive nominations for Citizen of the Year 1970. Nominations must be in writing, state why the nominee is selected, and be sent to the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year before February 4, 1971. Previous winners were Mrs. H. I. Collins W. D. Macnan and J. L. Lamb in 1967 1968 and 1969.

Start Year With Supper in MacGregor Hall on Jan 14

The MacGregor Chamber of Commerce will begin 1971 with a pot luck supper next Thursday at 7 o'clock in the MacGregor Memorial Hall. After the meal, the creme far meeting will review the 1970 financial statement and the year’s activities. The meeting is open to all and will be held Thursday, Jan 14.

Midgets Win First Game on Season Opener at Home

The Mac Gregor 16 team defeated Aust in 7 to 5 in their season debut at the home rink. Scorers included Jack Wood Daryl Borton Joe Davey Brent Tomchuk and Phillip Davey with a hat trick. Goalie Robin Allan starred for the squad coached by Doug Davey and Malcolm Burt. Reporter Roger Pogue.

Minor Hockey League Starts This Week

The Sprucewoods Minor Hockey League opens this season with MacGregor joining teams from Austin Carberry Wellwood and Brookdale. Competitions span 10 and under 12 and under 14 and under and 16 and under age groups across the partner towns.

Arthur Leckie Elected Fair Board President

Arthur Leckie was elected president for 1970 71 at a recent Agricultural Society meeting. D J McGregor and Wayne Moore were named 1st and 2nd vice-presidents, Clare Tarr named secretary-treasurer. The treasurer reported a successful year with a further provincial grant approved. Plans for the 1971 fair include a full prize list revision and upcoming meetings with sports committee and lady directors.

Centennial time capsule sealed by MacGregor committee

To mark MacGregor's centennial year the MacGregor Centennial Corporation sealed a time capsule. It contains 1970 MacGregor Herald issues, local lists and portraits, church and municipal imagery, election rolls, pins, stamps, and a 1971 calendar. Participants include Clare Tarr, Elsie Douglas, Mayor Glenn Lye, A M Hay, and A G McGregor.

MacGregor intermediates lost 5-1 to Somerset in a South Central Hockey League clash Sunday afternoon. The game featured breakaway goals by Somerset and a lone MacGregor score by Ken Green with assists from Tel ford and Heselwood. Bonspiel Here This Weekend At MacGregor Curling Club
