Pine Creek Division Names Committees

The Pine Creek School Division No. 30 Board held its first 1971 meeting on January 4 and re elected P. Stephenson as chairman for another year. G L Brarnarson was re elected vice chairman. The board discussed expected growth in committee workload due to education reforms and boundary changes. New trustees Archie Lach and Murray Burch joined, replacing Bruno Town and filling a vacancy from July 1970. Committees may use school facilities. by law actions set trustee remuneration at 750 yearly and the chairman at 1000, with ten cent mileage. By law 2/71 authorized current operating expenses borrowing. L L Brown named secretary treasurer. D W J Hay & Co. named auditor.

Austin Red Cross Annual Meeting January 19

The Austin Red Cross branch will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday January 19 at 2 p.m. at Mrs. H B Outhwaite's home. Local reports and other work accomplished will be read. Necessary business will be discussed. Lunch will be served.

Frank Hay Foursome Wins Weekend Spiel at MacGregor Curling Club

The Frank Hay rink of Hay Noble Bender and Jonasson captured the top event at the MacGregor Curling Club weekend bonspiel defeating Glen Wright Allan Drader Lloyd Street and Barry Rodgers in the final. Twenty rinks entered the event, two fewer than last year. Don Barber Tom Telford Jim MacDonald Stuart Young placed third in the first event behind Winnipeg's B Cameron Nazar Black Wiebe in fourth. In the second event Jack Wolfe Ken Wolfe Arnold Bachalo Lyn Snaith won top honors with Elmer Cairns Lorne Wright Lawrence Heselwood Robert Rodgers second. Stan Konopski Herman Weber Pete McGregor Jack Clark took third and Jack Hooper Carl Bergquist Herb McMillan Bill Turner were fourth. The third event went to Brian Telford Robert Litster Bud Bieganski Gordie Lye.

Intermediates Fall To Crystal City In Hard-Fought Hockey Duel

The MacGregor intermediates battled Crystal City to a standstill until late in the third period when Crystal City scored twice to pull ahead. MacGregor had tied the game on goals by Paul Gilmore with Gordie Lye assisting and later by Robert Litster with Rick Palmer assisting. Palmer, Litster, and Telford among the scorers kept the game tight before Crystal City sealed the win with two late goals.

Village Council Sets 1971 Agenda for MacGregor

The Village of MacGregor held its first 1971 meeting Tuesday January 5 with Mayor Glenn Lye and Councillors Ed Leckie S T Hay Russ Tarr A J Sloane. Committees were named including Health Welfare Parks Recreation Police Fire and Finance. Plans include water sewer rate reviews Hampton Street work sidewalk repairs and an Emergency Measures program. A special meeting is set for January 21 1971.

Manitoba Farm Truck Licences Tied to Act Amendments

Manitoba applicants for farm truck licences must meet Highway Traffic Act amendments redefining farmer as landowners or lessees who run farms or related operations. Requires activity for at least two and a half months yearly and limits carry all vehicles to front-seat use only unless all other seats are removed.

Minor Hockey Teams Busy Weekend in MacGregor Area

The MacGregor and district minor hockey clubs were active last weekend. The 10 and Unders opened year with a 4-3 win over Austin, Mark McGregor scoring all MacGregor goals. Robert Wiebe starred in goal with several key saves. The 10 and Unders then tied Carberry 5-5 on Friday, with Grant Noble tying the game late. Next action is at Carberry Saturday morning and a home game Friday.

Changes Announced In Crop Insurance Manitoba Farmers

Manitoba farmers with all risk crop insurance will no longer need to insure wheat to gain coverage. Agriculture Minister Sam Askiw says insurers must now insure two of 13 crops, reflecting shifting crop importance. Criteria include minimum acres and partial insurability of non wheat crops, with continued hail and enhanced coverage programs for 1971. Farmers should contact local agents for details on improved practices, summer fallow protection, and hail insurance.

Museum Auxiliary Meets at Austin

The Mani toba Agricultural Museum ladies auxiliary held its January 6 1971 meeting with 11 members present. Plans were made for summer committees including Centreville school Yellow Quill cottage and decoration tasks. They ordered souvenirs a 35 cup electric coffee perk and safety improvements for back door steps. Dues for 1971 were collected and a cairn project was debated pending authenticity. The next meeting is February 3 1971.
