Barber Rink Tops MacGregor Curling Bonspiel

Barrie Barber's rink won the MacGregor Curling Club's 62nd bonspiel defeating Ed Hulme's foursome 12-5 in the final. The Bruce Barber team led 34 rinks in the event which ran Thursday to Sunday in ideal curling weather despite a warm finish. Other prize crews included Jack Hooper's group taking third and Ron Borton’s quartet finishing fourth. Merchant's Event honors went to Ed Anderson's rink with Denwal Pharmacy trophies, and Treherne claimed the Citizens and Farmers event trophies.

CGLT Bonspiel Winners Announced for February Event

Congratulations to CGLT bonspiel winners dated February 6 with first event led by Colleen Lamb and team Colberg. Second place featured Linda Gilbert skip and Stanley Robinson with others, while third and fourth positions listed Cathy Lye Glen Lye Elizabeth Chant Art Palmer and Patti Purkess Gordon Purkess Joanne Muir Bruce Muir. The second event saw Melody Burch skip with Murray Burch Allison Tarr Clare Tarr taking first, and Danita Peck skip with Don Barber Doris Duch in second.

Town Happenings Cools as Bonspiels Open Around MacGregor

Weekend temps in the high thirties usher in a stretch of fair weather. MacGregor and District Community Centre plans a mixed bonspiel for March 5 to 7 while Austin men’s, MacGregor ladies, and Katrinne’s mixed events roll in. Austin carnival slated for March 6. MacGregor twinned with Peachland for B C Centennial celebrations. Minor Hockey Day slated by local association.

Nell Heming First Lady Signing Officer Dies in 1971

Ellen Bride Heming known as Nell Heming of MacGregor Manitoba died February 2 1971. Born August 1 1887 in Winnipeg she married Charles Ogilvy Heming in 1918. She was the first lady signing officer in Canada at a bank and served in MacGregor during World War II. Her ashes will be brought to MacGregor for interment later this year.

Busy Week For Minor Hockey Across Age Groups

The past week saw eight and unders split two games, beating Austin 7-0 then losing to Treherne 4-2 with Dale MacDonald and Stuart Thompson scoring twice each. MacGregor’s lineup included Bollman, MacDonald, Noble, and others as they also beat Brookdale 11-5, with Amann four goals and Tarr, Wright, Grove contributing. MacGregor’s ten and riders lost 4-0 at Brookdale, and the Midgets fell 7-2 at Carberry with Lye brothers scoring MacGregor’s goals. The ten and riders defeated Gladstone 3-2 in a high-energy game marred by a five-minute power outage, and the 10 and unders dropped 6-3 at Macdonald with Pogue, Borton, and Frank scoring for MacGregor.
