The Austin men's annual open bonspiel starts next Thursday with four events. Trophies and prizes await in each event. Entry fee is 12 dollars per rink. Entries may be given to Dan Rintoul or Cecil Jones before the event.
The MacGregor Junior Rifle Club has ceased operations temporarily due to a lack of students and instructors. Plans are to resume on the first Thursday in April. Manitoba sees 50 to 60 firearm accidents yearly with fatalities, underscoring the need for thorough firearm safety training for all youth interested in target shooting.
George Hayes of the Manitoba department of Knapaiey and cosa merce spoke at a closing session of an industrial development training course. He urged attendees to research likely prospects, build confidential relationships with local managements, and expand existing industry while understanding each community’s needs. The class reviewed two case histories and formed industry panels to share insights, with Hayes calling the results amazing.
Hawthorne Community Hospital celebrates the 25th anniversary of Mrs Peat Stewart RN with a plaque pin and silver compote. Stewart, a former Pearl Brisco, has served in every department and since 1966 has been director of central supply, after a luncheon and reception at the Cockatoo Inn Hawthorne.
MacGregor Ladies' Curling Club hosts its annual bonspiel starting next Friday and ending Sunday night. Three events offer trophies with a $12 entry per rink including a Saturday night smorgasbord. The MacGregor WI annual meeting on January 21 at Mrs. Charles Pennell’s home drew 16 members and one visitor. Reports show a successful year with weddings catered, an Easter bazaar, a fair float, and donations totaling 860 to various groups. Officers elected include Mrs. R. Thompson president and Mrs. Hotel treasurer. quilting led by Mrs. L. Anderson and Mrs. Grove.
The four day MacGregor men's bonspiel begins today with the old rink expected to be busy until Sunday night. A buffet luncheon is planned for Memorial Hall Friday afternoon as games run through the weekend.

E. Cox and E. K. W. Cox traveled to Winnipeg last Thursday for a dealers demonstration at Versa Tile Mfg. Co. The firm showcased new farming machinery planned for production this year, including a 90 to 100 hp four wheel tractor and a 185 hp tractor, plus several new field implements. About 200 dealers from across Canada toured the 378,000 square foot plant, which employs roughly 650 people. The company, formed in 1946, notes 25 years of progress.
Katrime's annual mixed bonspiel runs February 22 to 27 at the Katrime curling rink. Four events offer prizes for each. A lady must play third except for Katrime’s schedule players. Entry fee is $12 per rink. entries to H Duncan or J McRae by 6 p.m. February 20.
At the University of Wisconsin Madison James C Lowe and 2,203 foreign students from 103 countries study alongside 33,346 Americans. Asia leads the foreign enrollment with 281 from Hong Kong and 237 from India. others include China Canada the United Kingdom Nigeria and Thailand among many nations.
The Canadian Wheat Board seeks a market oriented shift in grain quotas storage and movement with tight control from elevator to shipping ports. J L Deibfried executive director told Portage la Prairie farmers the transitional quota system needs refinement toward timely placement of grain and competition with other exporters. Proposals by a federal committee are already in effect with more to come next year aiming for efficiency equity and stable farm income. Three per cent payments on the first 10000 of sales would fund stabilization when receipts fall below a five year average.
