Manitoba Prairie crops see above average yields this year

A Statistics Canada report notes heavy crop yields expected across Manitoba and parts of Saskatchewan and Alberta after a hot dry spell. Swathing is well underway in Manitoba with yields above average. Saskatchewan reports very good outlook except north where army worms spread. Alberta sees heat damage and early swathing across regions.

Allan Family Reunion Highlights Generations Across Canada

A warm sunny Allan family reunion gathered 109 members from third to fifth generations of the late Alexander William Allan at Island Park. Oldest attendees were Elma Meyers of Surrey and Marsh Smith of Portage la Prairie. Perry Allan chaired a buffet, races and a ball game followed a history of the family. Attendees came from British Columbia towns including Dawson Creek and Victoria, plus Manitoba and Ontario locales.

Potentially Serious Weeds Plague Manitoba Crops

Reports from north central Manitoba note heavy stands of Scentless Chamomile along roadsides and in grain fields. The weed resists all but Piclorom, which is not approved for field use, risking widespread crop damage around East Selkirk and Erickson. It is an annual or short lived perennial with white flower heads and carrot like leaves. farmers with knowledge should contact the Weed Supervisor at 685 12050.

Saskatchewan Manitoba Association Presses 3 Key Farm Debt Proposals

A Saskatoon Manitoba dealers group told Agriculture Minister Jack Messer on Monday it seeks three main measures: establish a mediation board to hear all cases, provide financial assistance or loan guarantees for farmers, and fund an education program to explain farm improvement loan benefits. They warned the bill as drafted risks boosting bad debt among dealers and questioned the impact on repossessions under existing Civil Rights protections.

MacGregor Village Council Discusses Community Centre

The MacGregor village council met Aug 9 with all members present led by Mayor Lye. Topics included land transfer for a community centre, water and sewer connections, and streets to the site. A building permit for Don McCulloch’s garage was approved.

Manitoba Farmers Boost Corn Contest Entries

Participation in the seagrain corn growing competition has more than doubled with 60 Manitoba farmers entered by the July 31 cutoff, led by grain supervisor Ken Ganczer. New growers account for 30 percent of entries, and the Calvert distillery aims to buy large amounts of Manitoba corn, supporting a broader grain development program across Canada by Seagram.

Mr and Mrs Lawrence Smith hosted Aug 12 for Fred and Muriel Smaith on their 25th wedding anniversary.
