Learner Permit Fees Mirror Driver Licences in Manitoba
The Canadian Press reports Manitoba learner permits since July 14 cost the same as regular driver's licenses after the higher rates were introduced. Learners pay a four month permit at $1.25, then switch to the standard driver’s licence fee annually. The yearly licence totals $3 plus insurance. The earlier report that rates would take effect November 1 was incorrect.
SAC Flights Are Rescheduled Over Manitoba and Saskatchewan
Low level training flights by United States Strategic Air Command over southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan were postponed to avoid bird migration. The move follows protests and a government statement that missions will be suspended from mid September to early November. Flights will run at 900 to 2200 feet along a 200 mile Canadian path near 20 to 30 miles from the US border. The route aims to avoid settled areas, with prior Western Canada exercises noted in 1968 and 1970. Nearby Whitewater Lake area, a major waterfowl flyway, drew protest from MP Jack Murta who urged the Defence Minister to reroute over US territory. Officials cited Canadian concurrence due to the lake’s spring mass migration, and noted the bomber path would pass about two miles north of the lake, though a wide corridor could allow drift over the area.
