Lynden Men to Leave for Camp Lewis Next Week
The first group of Lynden men drafted for the National Army will depart for Camp Lewis in Tacoma next week. Exemption board officials urge readiness within twenty four hours as orders are not yet issued. Forty percent of draftees are expected to meet in Tacoma on Wednesday. The district board at Seattle certified Henry Polinder of Lynden for service and a list of draftees who did not seek exemption includes many from Lynden Everson Blaine and Goshen with several seeking industrial exemptions.

W A Linklater of the Western Washington Experiment Station advises farmers to feed oat straw to dairy stock this winter to cut costs as alfalfa prices rise. With alfalfa around 25 dollars a ton and straw at 9 to 10, dairymen can profitably substitute straw, especially if mixed with hay or silage and supplemented with molasses.

Real estate from the J. P. Schmidt estate was sold at public auction by heirs. Frank Le Cocq bought the office building for 275 dollars, Mrs. Boerhave’s brick millinery store was sold to Nick Boerhave for 775 dollars, and the Third Street residence went to Walter Pixley for 425 dollars. Lynden Berry Growers Harvest 15000 Dollar Raspberry Crop
The Lynden cannery processed about 200000 pounds of raspberries this summer earning roughly 15000 dollars for Lynden area growers. Fifteen hundred five gallon cans of pulp and juice were prepared for soda fountains and jelly factories.

Allan Taylor a Lynden pioneer died Sunday at Burlington General Hospital at age 69. He farmed and gardened all his life, moved to Lynden from the East 30 years ago and then to La Conner 12 years ago. He had been in ill health for about two years before death.

Eastern Star Banquet Hosts State Grand Matron at Masonic Hall
The Eastern Star lodge entertained Mrs. McCormick of Tacoma the state grand matron and Mrs. Shutts a grand officer Thursday at Masonic Hall. A banquet followed lodge work. Several chapter members joined the event. A 24 hour feeding plan described includes a layered pile of silage hay straw on the feeding room floor dampened with hot water then fed to cows after 24 hours. Daily rations for about 25 cows total 150 pounds alfalfa hay 200 pounds straw and 750 pounds silage plus 25 cows receive 25 to 30 pounds milk 6 pounds oats 5 pounds bran and 1 pound oil meal cottonseed or soy meal.

Parsonage Contract Awarded for Grover Street Church

Maupin Sells 100 Acre River Ranch for 18000
E. E. Maupin sold his 100 acre river bottom ranch thirty miles from Lynden on the Guide Meridian road Friday to S. P. Ritchie of Bellingham for 18000. The farm includes 55 acres in plowed land 20 acres uncleared and the rest pasture. Ritchie plans to place a farmer on the place next week. The Maupins will travel to the East for an extended visit and return to Lynden in the spring.
