Lynden will see a tax mill levy reduction of 3.805 mills next spring due to lower valuations. The following county table shows next year’s levies for area school districts compared with last year, indicating a general decline in tax burden for residents.
A Lynden cook book notices prize winning and favorite recipes from the Lynden district. Includes Gravenstein apple jelly, lemon sponge cake, corn bread and pumpkin pie recipes, Salt Rising Bread method, and a travel note about Mrs. Vander Griend and daughters leaving for Fresno to visit in California.
Six districts North Prairie Northwood Delta Sunshine Greenwood and Lynden petitioned the Skagit County superintendent for a December 3 election on forming a union high school with Lynden as the center. Timon Riverside and Glendale have not yet advanced the plan. In Skagit County the idea is popular and seen as cost saving, with Nooksack Everson also voting December 3.

Sunday guests at the Elmer Lund home included Mr and Mrs O L Dow Mrs C Johnson and Frank Johnson. Mrs D W Alverson returned from Seattle. James Schuineman shows rapid improvement. A baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs Gerrit Assink. Grade cows at the J Meenk sale averaged 103. Several residents traveled to Seattle and Vancouver B C for various activities and hunting trips.
The Whatcom County Dairymen's Association ordered 47 bonds totaling 4400 dollars paid at its meeting in Bellingham. Bonds include two 500s, twenty-one 100s and twenty-two 50s. Financially the group improves and finds a ready market for its product. Pavement Lynden to Sumas opens Saturday at 5 p.m. per county engineer J C Hills. The nine mile route will ease through traffic from Bellingham to Sumas via Lynden and a paved branch to Guide Meridian. Plans seek to complete paving to Sumas on State Road with a spring contract.
The ladies of the First Reformed Church plan their annual bazaar at Hawley's Hall Friday evening with a free lunch offered. All are invited to attend.
All town girls interested in playing basketball are asked to meet at Lynden High School Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock. An effort will be made to organize a local team.
A Peoples State Bank stockholders meeting and families gathered Friday at the I O F Hall with full attendance. Program featured piano solo by Margaret Shagren readings by Mrs. P J Van Hemert and Mrs J W Stearns, vocal solo by Louis Helder, a male quartet, and lively games led by J T Zylstra followed by light refreshments.
Lynden property will be sold at 9 a.m. at the county courthouse for non payment of taxes. Frank Wilson, county clerk, posted notices after visiting Lynden to announce the sale. The Lynden post office lists the properties on the block, with about 1,500 total parcels countywide and Lynden having the fewest items.
Funeral services were held at Knapp's parlors for Walter Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Brown of Northwood. The Northwood school closed as intermediate and grammar students attended the service. Walter, born February 17 1908, died at thirteen years eight months six days after illness and an operation at St Luke's hospital in Bellingham. He leaves nine sisters and six brothers.
Bert W. Brintnall of Seattle spent Tuesday afternoon in Lynden seeking Lynden’s best horseshoe pitchers to enter a four man team for a big tournament tied to the Northwest Apple Show in Seattle next month. Lynden men who want to enter are asked to see the sporting editor of the Tribune at once. A fine cup will be awarded and individuals prizes will also be given.
Sylvan Weidkamp excelled at the Burlington auto races last week winning three major prizes. He took first in a three mile race second in a five mile race and second in a time trial with a record of 1 18.
Mr and Mrs L A Piercey have moved to the Freeman residence which they recently purchased.
The P N G Club will meet Friday afternoon with Mrs Ray Slade. A Washington Co-Operative Egg and Poultry Association warehouse at Queckenbush Dock Bel lingham was purchased for 10000 to expand business. The old warehouse proved too small and the new facility will open Monday.
The Lynden society is invited to a Halloween social Friday evening. The W W G will host the B Y P U meeting Sunday at 6 30 pm in the Baptist Church with the topic Americanization all are invited.
State highway engineers say travel to Seattle will be nearly all on pavement after Nov 15 Chuckanut drive will be cleared of slides and traffic ready eliminating the Lake Sam ish gravel. A new paving stretch between East Stanwood and Silvana will also open reducing gravel by about four miles. The result is an almost continuous paved route from Lynden to Seattle in about four hours within the speed limit.
State officers of the W C T U plan a county conference on Peace and Law Enforcement in Bellingham on November 1. Activities include Bible studies by Rev T H Jorgenson and Rev H S Templeton, a round table on Law Enforcement, a World Peace outlook by Mrs Frances Axtell, a discussion on the International Conference on World Disarmament, and a 7 30 pm Peace medal contest by six Normal girls with an address by Mrs Hannon.
The State College of Washington announces winter short courses in agriculture from January 2 to February 24, aimed at farmers and their families. The program includes home economics for women with practical courses in food, clothing, sanitation, and furnishing. No entrance exam. open to anyone over 16 who can read and write. Students may attend four weeks if away eight weeks is not possible. Courses can focus on preferred branches like fruit or dairy.
Last week the crossing over G N tracks at Ferndale station opened to traffic removing the Second street detour. A 250 foot stretch of mud and bumps is replaced by a paved road to River road, built by C E Lind of Bellingham. Two marriage licenses issued to Alban Johnson Lorena Fenske and Russ Davis Winnie B vlow. Mrs W B Schuyleman returns home after a visit with the Oldemeyer family. Mrs H Bouma visits her mother Mrs L Koole.
A Sunday strike by railroad workers would barely affect Lynden's perishable egg and butter output for a short period. If extended, the Chicago Milwaukee line into Lynden could shut, but trucks boats and nearby markets from Seattle to Vancouver would help sustain shipments. Eggs and poultry can be moved to Seattle and thence to California, with storage in Lynden and Seattle plants handling overflow. Butter would be trucked to Bellingham and Seattle, while liquid milk shipments rely on Seattle and sourced routes. The Whatcom County Dairymen’s plant can export powdered milk via Seattle to New York, using ships through the Panama Canal. Fuel supply remains the main concern for the Lynden Creamery as lines adjust. The Imperial Fir Lumber Company may cover fuel needs if needed.
County Game Warden J. M. Aitken warns the public in a formal notice published by The Tribune. The document outlines open seasons for upland birds in Whatcom County and lists prohibitions including use of dip-nets in fresh waters, hunting without a license, shooting restrictions, and enforcement details for the State of Washington.
A baking sale will be held Saturday at the Lynden Department Store conducted by the ladies of the M. E. Church. Proceeds go to church activities and local missions.
Friends surprised Mr. and Mrs. J. Meenk at their home on Monday evening. The Meenk family plans to spend the winter in California with their daughter.
