The Pomona Grange program at Wiser Lake on October 6 1908 features music by the Grange a welcome address responses and recitations by Annie Baer Mrs Dorr Miss Carpenter and others including recitations by Charlie Bartlett Ella Baer and J Wayland Clarke with papers songs phonograph music and remarks by Mr Sorenson Mr Dorr Mr Pike Mrs Bean Mrs Stevenson and Mary Jackman lecturer.
Little Pearl Baxter and her grandmother shared a birthday anniversary on the same day two a century apart. Pearl turned two and grandmother Mrs Ebert Baxter was sixty three as friends Flossie Bixby Wilma Case Bertha Oaks Ester Daniels Florence Wheeler Julia Pace Helen Wheeler Shirley Wheeler and Freda Freeman joined a small afternoon gathering and feast before departing with well wishes.
The ladies met at their regular place October 10 with good attendance and spirits. Mrs Mohler, lately injured, is improving. she is Comrade Mohler's wife. Mrs Pym recovering from a fall at Father LeClaire funeral but able to attend. Mrs Will Storrey ill. hopes for quick return. Mrs Randall absent without stated cause. Mrs Wilcoxen has a bad cold but worked at Corps.
On October 12 George and Willis Worthen assisted their parents Mr and Mrs C F Worthen in celebrating the forty ninth anniversary of their marriage by moving their household goods from the Rachel Smith house to their new home on Grover and Second Street.
The Royal Neighbors will host a basket social and literary program at Fraternal Hall on October 24. After the program, games will be played and fun is promised. ladies are asked to bring well filled baskets. A humorous weighing game suggests ladies offer a box per man, with payment per pound. W. D. Ryan of Springfield Illinois and M. Ryan of Lynden are mentioned. Ryan serves as secretary-treasurer of the United Mine Workers of America and attended a Seattle wage-scale meeting for Dist. No. 10 a few days earlier.
The Whatcom County Traction Co requests a franchise to build tracks along Front Street Lynden. The final reading and discussion occur Friday at the Council meeting. The dispute centers on whether tracks may be built on the main street without planking, a condition the company refuses to meet.
Marriage announced for Mr. James Campbell of Sibley Iowa and Mrs. Alice O Connor formerly of Ripon Wisconsin on September 1 1908 in Council Bluffs Iowa They plan to reside at Farrington New Mexico after October 20 where Mrs Campbell serves as Superintendent of the Navajo Mission a school for Indian children and she previously led the Lynden tickmey Indian Mission.
The firm Milan & Dillon in Lydney is dissolved by mutual agreement. P. H. Milan will collect and pay all outstanding bills of the firm. Signing parties are H. Milan and H. Dillon.
To the Grangers and Farmers of Whatcom County you are invited to Laurel on Oct 16 and 17 with axes and saws to clear twenty acres donated by Mr. Sorenson for an annual county fair. Shares of stock will be sold and a stockholders meeting held Friday afternoon. Ladies bring baskets for luncheon and provisions for overnight stays.
Mrs Vail sang a solo at the high school Monday afternoon. Seventh and eighth grade girls enjoy new basketballs. Miss Sears, the primary teacher, spent weekend in Bellingham. Eighth grade boys build stove screen. Mesdames Beckes Suttley King and Beach visited grades. Sixth graders sand and varnish furniture. Repapering brightens rooms in older building. Concert by Miss Golde Funk and Miss Bellis of Bellingham raised library funds with 260 tickets sold. Seventh grade boys cleared scattered paper from grounds.
The Lynden based group of school marms met at Mrs. G C Garman's home to organize a tete-a-tete club. They have not chosen a name yet but proposed titles like Wielders of the Birch Rod or Moulders of Human Destinies. The club plans to invite more young ladies and keep meetings sober and precise. The next gathering will be at Mrs. A N French's home.
Arthur L. Swim declines the nomination for Justice of the Peace in Lynden Precinct. He states the nomination was without his knowledge or consent and asks friends to vote for another candidate. He learned of the nomination on the 8th of the month and offers no further comment.
An informal reception will be held next Friday evening in the church lecture rooms to honor Rev. J M Wilder and his wife. A short program includes songs, solos by Mrs D Mulder Mrs J R Vail a response by Rev J M Wilder an instrumental duet and more solos by Frank Knapp. Refreshments will be served and each guest should bring a spoon.
Public sale offered at the auction lot eight miles north of Bellingham and half a mile west of Laurel shingle mill on Thursday October 22 1908 starting at ten o clock a.m. Describes ten horses twelve cattle two sheep two yearlings and one bull with details on age color and weight plus farming implements including two cream testing and separator devices. Terms require cash for sums up to ten dollars and eight months credit at 8 percent on bankable notes for larger amounts with longer credit on horses. No property leaves until fully settled and lunch is provided. Auctioneer George Bostwick and Clerk R W Green presiding.
Public auction at the old Marr Place one-half mile west and a quarter mile north of Hoffman Hall opens Tuesday October 20 1908 at 1 pm. Items include two horses a bay team seven cattle six cows milking soon a Mitchell wagon a Delaval separator plows cultivator six tons hay tools and other farm articles. Terms: cash under $10 otherwise six months credit at 8 percent. George Bostwick auctioneer R W Green clerk.
