Drivers or cars may obtain application blanks for state licenses at Lynden garages and service stations. The $1 fee must accompany the completed form and be sent to the State Treasurer in Olympia by July 21. Each applicant needs two reputable citizen signatures attesting to driving skill and fitness.
The Klatawa Club will host a dance at the I O O F Hall Friday evening in honor of the Lynden baseball team. Receipts go to the baseball club fund. Klatawa dances are popular and this event is expected to be one of the year’s best with many fine features planned.
Funeral services were held at Lynden cemetery Saturday for Socrates Thallhimer who died at his home near Sumas June 2. He was 82 years old.
The Tribune reports steady subscription growth with numerous names listed as new subscribers since May 1 including J. G. Wheeler Mrs. Charles Breckenridge A G Johnston Fred Shea William Morrison George Fisher Fred Legoe and many others reflecting strong reader demand.
Lynden Christian School held its Friday closing exercises at the Fair Grounds with large attendance. The program featured songs, recitations, dialogues, and a blossom drill, including performances by 1st through 5th graders, a double quartet, and a closing address by Rev. A. J. Brink. Mrs. E Breen and family moved into a new home on Grover Street.
Construction begins on the Second Christian Reformed Church at Front and Eighth Streets Lynden. A 46 by 70 foot modern building with two front belfry towers is planned with basement facilities now in use by the congregation. John Schutte leads concrete work as volunteers excavate rapidly hauling 130 loads of dirt on Saturday and again Monday.
Sanitation Commissioner W. S. Baldwin will visit all backyards and alleys this week. Homeowners who do not clean up after the first warning face prosecution under the city ordinances.
A tar pot overheated and exploded in the Meridian High School basement, destroying the auditorium, gym, piano, sewing machines, school equipment, and a Ford car. Estimated loss is 8000 dollars with limited insurance. The main school buildings were saved. Instructor George Rosenhall was heating tar to paint the roof. John Lindberg and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Colley are noted movers.
Lynden Chapter No 12 of Lynden and Sehome Chapter No 17 of Bellingham Eastern Star along with their families will picnic at Berthusen's Park on Thursday June 23, with all visiting members invited.
A Lynden school levy of seven mills was approved by 146 to 60. The additional levy lowers total school taxes by three mills compared with this year and helps the district meet expenses and reduce its $11,000 warrant indebtness.
Farmers Mutual Telephone Company reports net income of 11106.22 for 1920 up from 2309.95 last year, with phones rising from 2355 to 2596. The Lynden exchange serves 670 phones, vs Blaine 405 Ferndale 368 and Nooksack 868. An annual stockholders meeting is set for Monday at Dairy Association Hall Dock St Bellingham.
The body of Private Arvid Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Johnson, will be returned to Lynden from France this week for a military funeral on arrival. Born February 12 1890, he enlisted June 2 1917 and sailed for France February 1918. He was killed October 20 1918. The body was shipped from Jersey City and services will be Sunday if arrival permits.
Peter Koert secretary of the Whatcom County Egg and Poultry Association submits to the Interstate Commerce Commission a resolution urging lower freight charges on eggs and dressed poultry. The group claims current trans continental rates impede shipments to Eastern markets, leaving Pacific Coast producers with surplus and low prices.
Captain and Mrs Bowler visited Port Townsend relatives last Sunday and stayed with Bob Bowler's family before his orders take him to the Philippines. He plans to depart July 1.
A dramatic lightning display damaged the Egley barn near Lynden but caused no losses as rainfall quelled the fire. The event followed a milking by Mr Egley, while Queen Wayne Zozo Johanna the seventh year Holstein from Grandview Stock Farm is vying for the world milk production record with a calf by her side and strong support from observers.
Lynden Modern Woodmen will participate in Ferndale's Fourth of July events with a full day of activities. The schedule includes a parade, picnic lunch, addresses by Mayor Brunson and Dr S V Hoopman, drills by Royal Neighbors and Modern Woodmen, contests, baseball, tug of war, a picnic supper, band concert, fireworks, and a grand ball. Officials will be on duty to ensure safety and a Lynden Camp meeting is planned for Saturday evening.
A delegation of Depot Road farmers asked the commissioners to grade and gravel the road from Lynden Sumas paving north to the line. They described the road as in very bad condition for years and urged immediate improvement. The commissioners took the request under advisement.
Miss Lila Love received a bridal shower hosted by friends at the Methodist Church Monday evening. Mrs. C. M. Henderson reported breaking her farm Tuesday morning.
The Nooksack Valley Baseball League expands to six teams after Deming and Custer were admitted at a Everson meeting last Monday night. A four game series format with every opponent sets a twenty game schedule and the top percentage winner is league champion. Lynden and Deming share 1.000 pct, Ferndale and Everson at .333, Acme .250, Custer .000.
Lyndon Volunteer Fire Department officials were chosen at the June 1 meeting. W. S. Baldwin was named chief, W. A. Bauman assistant chief, W. K. Pixley president, E. E. Horton treasurer, Charles Ecker fire police, and Gerrit Schuyleman secretary.
Children's Day exercises will be given by the Sunday School at 11 a.m. at the M. E. Church. In the evening a reading by Mrs. Lelia Edson titled A Tragedy and the Grace of God by Carolyn McDonald of Tokio will be featured, arranged by the Woman's Home Missionary Society.
At a Tuesday evening gathering at the Bovendam residence Mrs. Meaker and her son Charles saw their meek horse become frightened and bolt. The frightened animal ran away toward home leaving a buggy behind in the disturbance.
Mrs. D W Alverson was called to Seattle yesterday due to the serious illness of her sister-in-law Mrs. L A Treen.
