Judge D F Wright of Thurston County Superior Court rules Washingtons statewide prohibition measure valid and constitutional against M and K Gottstein Seattle wholesalers. Appeal likely to reach October Supreme Court term with possible U S Supreme Court review. law takes effect January 1 1916.
Ferndale society notes numerous visitors and gatherings including Miss Mable Jones of Snohomish honored at a Friday party. Dr. and Mrs. Hamshaw camping at Birch Bay with daughter Earnest Sather and Miss Pearl Van Ostrand. Residents visiting, traveling, and hospital plans feature throughout the week.
Funeral services for Hakon Olson Hovander are set for Sunday at 1 PM from the family home. he died at 74. Birth announced for Gust Larson’s daughter born July 18. Local visits include Mr. and Mrs. Swanson in Seattle and Mabel Jones leaving Snohomish. Infant son of Bert and Mrs Murray found dead. sympathy offered. Everett area guests include Will Tiner Muriel and Frayer family at Schell home.
Senator Miles Poin dexter will attend the Old Settlers Picnic in Ferndale Washington on Saturday August 7 at 2 PM and deliver an address to attendees. Sumas merchants continue to take Canadian money at par while banks discount it 1 percent. Row notes a serious auto accident near Blaine on Drayton road with one occupant seriously injured.
E W Ruge of Bellingham buys the T S Berkeley Co store and stock in Custer and will take charge soon. Other notes include H C Daulton visiting lower Sound, a three day fishing trip by Parrish party, and Mrs. Lyle Hicks improving after burns. The Custerball team beat Argus 10 to 5 on home grounds.

Thomas Handy remains very low this week. A Mission Sunday School picnic gathered a good crowd at Van Buren Thursday. Miss Blanche Goodrich visits the Bloom family. Tracy Riddle’s baby is improving after sickness. Handy boys spent the weekend at Birch Bay. Sunday school and church services drew a large crowd at Grange Hall. E J Kamm bought several calves recently. Maskell and Dinwiddie of Van Zandt completed road work northeast of town. The school ground is being leveled and a two acre park is planned. Charles Kamm hauled wood for C C Singer. A social at Mr and Mrs Craig’s honored Augusta who leaves for California to attend school.
Mrs. Longstaff visited friends in Vancouver British Columbia last week. Mrs. G N Heaton left for three weeks with her mother Mrs. Mary Pollard in Westminster BC. Charles Parker and Rudy Oltman headed for a week at Deming. Mrs Dahlquist and daughters and the Misses Nissen camp at Birch Bay. A large shower for Mrs Goldie Beard was given at Mrs George Beard home with many gifts. Roy Johnson spent Sunday at the Shoup home. Mrs M W Roby now in Sedro Woolley has a position in the Northern Hospital. Mrs Charles Constant and Mrs Will Dorr hosted the Daughters of Dorcas meeting with about twenty members and guests.
Pearl Frost heads a committee to solicit funds for a church with aides Mmes Louisa Constant Minturn and Frost to decide on plans. A noon chicken dinner was served.
G Lindgren of Bellingham visited in the area with Sunday guests at Mrs John Axling. A group from here went to Bellingham to watch a ball game at Elks park. Charlie Rosna is on the sick list. Rev and Mrs E Friberg and family dined with the Axling family. E Markstrom hosted Mr and Mrs Troberg and family A P Axlund and Reuben Axlund with Edna Blomquist at the E Anderson home. Helgath road finished by county grader ready for gravel. Harry Vander Mei hauled wood for C P Wilson to Lynden. H Vander Yacht built a new bridge over the ditch in front of his place. C Christopherson was a Lynden visitor Monday.
Miss Pearl Nims of Prairie District visited friends here last week. A Mission picnic was held here last Thursday with many area representatives from Custer Ferndale Kendall Blaine Strandell Bellingham Sumas Van Buren and Lynden. A surprise party for Mrs Clarence Wheeler was held Thursday. Rena Kirkman of Sumas visits the Perry home. A freight train frightened horses near Nooksack when Mr Pierce unloaded feed, causing wagon damage.
A Lynden party picnicked at Silver Lake on Friday. The group included Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Steffe Miss Mabel Steffe Mr. and Mrs. John Storrey and family and the De Nye and Cruickshank families. The outing was by automobile.
Washington dairy industry faces low butter fat yield with about one third of cows deemed scrubs not paying for their feed. State Department of Agriculture to issue bulletin on Raising Calves and Feeding Cows, offering a simplified ration table for balanced feeding to improve productivity.
The Home Missionary Society of the M E church hosted Mrs. J C Spaulding with an afternoon of pleasant conversation and refreshments. The rooms were perfumed with sweet peas and petunias. Attending were Mrs. Chas Jacobs and granddaughter, Mrs. C E Pangborn, Mrs. R Heaton, Mrs. H H Jamieson, Mrs. J M Beatty, Mrs. L C Wright, Mrs. Eva S Thompson, Mrs. Fred Ireland, Mrs. F E Kelsey, Mrs. Paul H Ashby and son Paul.
A group of young people led by Miss Mabel Plenk and others leaves last Tuesday for a ten day camping trip to Vashon Island to attend the B Y P U assembly in session there. Mr. Ernest Tucker of Lynden also attends the weekend assembly.
De Valois and Kok families arrived in Oak Harbor this week for a brief visit, spending time with local relatives and touring area sights.
Whatcom County plans the largest education exhibit yet at the 1915 County Fair October 5 to 9. A new school building on the grounds will be constructed with bids called immediately to be ready for opening day. Premium lists announce many prizes for the school children section and grounds will be painted bright. Mrs. M L Watson donated adjacent land for free team and auto quarters with special passes for owners to move between grounds.
Everson and nearby communities report a flurry of visits and stays with families traveling to Seattle Glacier Bellingham Snohomish Anacortes and Birch Bay. Guests include Mr and Mrs Somers and daughters Alice and Eleanor Miss Driver Miss Irene Krouse Miss Adeline Ingersoll and many others visiting relatives attending picnics and lawn socials.
Mr and Mrs J H Jacoby entertained at dinner Sunday with guests including Mr and Mrs Wm Loucks and children of Aldergrove BC and Mr and Mrs J W Austin and grandchildren of Sunshine.
Miss Ellen Booman is visiting this week at the home of her uncle Nelg Ling inRushjo British Columbia.
