Lynden residents must file 1919 income tax returns and pay due taxes to the federal government. Penalties apply for filings after March 15. Tax rates are 4 percent on the first segment above exemptions and 8 percent on the remainder, with exemptions of 1000 for single and 2000 for married or head of family, plus 200 per dependent under 18.
Extension classes for teachers in service will be organized at the Normal School after the holidays. The Normal School has a practice of Saturday rural and city teach classes for up to five credits, open to first, second or third year students or those seeking no credit. Up to twelve credits may be earned before the school year ends. The Lynden Eastern Star Chapter will hold initiation and installation of officers at the Normal School on Friday at 10 o'clock January tenth, with all members urged to attend.
Whatcom County Dairymen's Association has not yet chosen a site for a utility plant. Plans aim to start powdered milk production in spring. J A Scollard of the United Association notes rising demand for milk powder and predicts strong future growth, with skimmed powder selling around 23 to 24 cents per carload in Chicago.
A joint Christmas program was presented at the Christian Reformed Church featuring pupils from Lynden Christian and Ebenezer Schools. The program included invocations, recitations, songs such as Cradle Hymn and Stille Nacht, and a series of poems and duets performed by students from various grades.
The Whatcom County Cow Testing Association begins again with a 600 cow cap or two 600 cow chapters if enough sign up. County agent H B Carroll Jr coordinates and applications, with a Tribune blank seen here. Louis E Carter extols dairy gains from cow testing and cooperative effort aided by USDA and state extension.
Lynden faces Skagit County basketball champions Mt Vernon Friday night in a competitive clash. Lynden relies on speed and intricate teamwork to counter Mt Vernon’s size, with a preliminary game at 7 30. General admission 15c 25c. reserved 25c 35c at Knapp's Furniture Store.
Dr. Johnson, poultry veterinarian from Western Washington Experiment Station at Puyallup, spoke to Lynden poultrymen at the high school on Diseases of Chickens. The talk used stereoptical views and displays of diseased birds as examples. A large Lynden gathering attended the lecture.
A Lynden Motor Company garage fire broke out Monday afternoon and was extinguished before the fire department arrived. Fire extinguishers did the work, and the blaze was out in record time.
Last week near the depot a falling snag crushed and badly damaged Stegqrb Poultry A Upe’s chicken coop. No chickens died. Stegink left the poultry house five minutes before the accident occurred.
Lynden Public Schools will be closed on New Year’s Day per a school board decision. Classes will proceed as usual on Friday.
Miss Laurel Bridgham teaches third grade in place of Mrs Campbell who resigned. Extra teacher needed for crowded 3rd 4th 5th. Miss Bergstrom and Miss Lowry assigned. Logan Sheriff re entered eighth grade. Sixth grade moved to high school room. December perfect attendance listed for 8th 7th 6th 5th 2nd 1st grades with many named students. Social events include spelling contest prizes and Christmas dinners.
Lynden soldiers sailors and marines will meet at the G A R Hall on Wednesday Jan 7 at 8 o clock to form a Lynden Post of the American Legion. Major W D Kirkpatrick of the Bellingham Post will be present to assist and address the group.
Carrol Worthen of the Marines arrived in Lynden Christmas morning after an eighteen month absence. He was discharged December 20 at Quantico Virginia and came home at once. Worthen enlisted June 26 1918 and sworn in July 5 1918. He trained at Mare Island and Quantico then sailed for France September 29. He saw no action before the armistice and did not reach German soil. He spent twelve months in France at Tours and Brest. He will leave Saturday to resume studies at Pullman.
The George Frick home entertained Mr and Mrs Ben Treischel of Everson, Mr and Mrs Paul Frick and family, and Mr J L Beiter of Nooksack on Christmas Day.
Lynden residents will hear T. Upton, an Ellison-White man, speak in Bellingham on The Making of a Man this Thursday. The Lynden group invites members to attend the lecture and support the event.
The Sewing Club met with Miss Hazel Lowery Tuesday night. The evening featured fancywork and refreshments for attendees.
Mr and Mrs J K Rinehart visited Burlington and Evett last week detailing stops and conversations with local residents during their travels.
Martin Berkes bumped his forehead on a post Sunday night and sustained a split wound. He received medical attention for the injury.
Miss Alice Cole of Seattle visits sister Mrs. R. L. Averill during Christmas week. George Wetzel suffers an abscess on his neck. C. B. Bay and Ensign John Bay spend Christmas in Lynden.
