Lynden Town Council enacted a comprehensive traffic ordinance to regulate motor vehicle operation within city limits. The measure sets age bans, speed caps, load limits, parking restrictions, lighting and safety requirements, accident duties, and penalties ranging from five to one hundred dollars.
Lynden town council enacts definitions for motor vehicles streets and terms including motor vehicle trailer and auto stage. Age limits set 15 to drive with guardian. 21 for for hire or auto stage. Speed restrictions apply near crossings school zones and business districts. It is unlawful to back up or turn around at intersections unless necessary. Exhaust muffler requirement imposed.
The high school lyceum series welcomes the Artists Trio this Saturday night. Three skilled performers especially from Mrs. Vera McKelvie Miss Alma Merriman and Miss Florence Thorp will present music readings and cartooning. The program starts at 8 30 with a lively mix of art and song.
The Lynden City Council says water rates must rise to cover higher operating costs. The water board of Serrurier, Van Leeuwen, and Bauman will meet to draft a new rate schedule, with no changes in years amid rising expenses and needed tower repairs possibly requiring replacement this year.
Mrs A Harlander sustained a severe leg injury Monday afternoon when a frightened horse caused a buggy crash near the Vander Griend residence as linemen rolled wires. The dashboard broke and other parts were damaged.
Lynden Community Club discussed attracting summer automobile tourists to Whatcom County. A committee will study creating an auto camping park and placing inviting signs at key junctions to draw travelers from Seattle, Canada, and points south. The club also considered shifting store hours to seven to five from April to October.
Nominations for the township elections to be held on Tuesday, March 2, have been made in Lynden Township. Registration is not necessary. Ballot names include Supervisors 1st District Lew Tromler, Assessor George Whipple, Treasurer Nels Jacobsen, Clerk Conrad Axling.
Lynden and Meridian split two county basketball games on Friday night with Lynden boys narrowly losing 15 to 14 while Lynden girls won 20 to 18. The series opens county finals with Meridian to visit Lynden February 13 for a potential third game on neutral ground. Players listed include Lynden Meurer Bloom Dunker Hatley Smith LeCocq Wilson Packard Knapp and Lynden subs. Meridian Bellingar G Lusk Halz F Bellingar Nelson Bently subs. Referee was Foster Carver of Bellingham.
Mrs Wilmer Cruikshank broke her right upper arm in a bad fall Sunday at the home of D Cruikshank. She slipped on an icy walk.
Lynden High School, led by coach Edna MacKinnon, lost the third contest of the season in Everett as a power plant accident left the auditorium lit only by oil lamps. Debaters Ed Kamm Elmer Swenson and Edward Le Cocq faced George Grafft George Guttormson and Neil Ross for Everett, who won on finish in oratory. The Whatcom team defeated Meridian at Laurel the same night, with Whatcom and Everett slated to clash next month.
The hearing of the Chinese egg case in which Lynden poultrymen are interested has been postponed until March 12.
Nels Jensen a Lynden district resident died Monday at age seventy one years eleven months after an illness begun a month earlier. Funeral services were held at the Peter Jensen home Tuesday by Rev. O Borge of Lawrace with interment in Lynden cemetery. He is survived by two sons Peter and John and two daughters one in Denmark where he was born and another Mrs Fields in British Columbia who attended the funeral.
Mrs Anton Von Euw suffered serious hand injuries last week Friday when a large battle broke out. Several residents report minor ailments this week including grippe and various colds. Social visits abound with trips to Bellingham Skagit County Lynden Ferndale and Seattle noted. House purchases and birthdays anchor a list of local happenings as neighbors keep in touch.
The Rev David Reuigh a missionary to Japan will speak at the Re formed Church on Grover Street next Sunday evening about the work of the Reformed Church in Japan.
Ray Hookstra of the City Meat Market received a carload of corn-fed Eastern steers this week for Lynden retail trade. Lots 9 and 10 of block 30 have changed hands with J. S. Austin buying them from Alva Miller through the Cruikshank real estate agency.
Friends gathered at 1 pm at John and Gerrit De Graaf home for the funeral of A De Graaf who died Tuesday morning after an illness since New Years. Rev J Steephorst led services. He was 76. survived by a daughter Mrs John Verduin four sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Chris C King sold lot 10 block 28 to Elza Tremain with Frank Cruikshank the seller.
Skagit Construction Company awarded eight mile Lynden Laurel road paving contract for 204818.30 with bid details from Riddle and Hawkins Bel lingham and J W Hoover Seattle. Start date planned March 1 if weather allows with work in Lynden district, paving cost about 2.34 per square yard for 79700 sq yd.
The Lynden Community Club urged the County Commissioners to pave the north and south Everson river roads instead of the Geiger road. They argued the Geiger route would lengthen travel, raise costs for farmers and businessmen, and serve far fewer people. Three hearings were held with no action taken by the commissioners.
H. E. Upston provincial poultry instructor of British Columbia will address the Whatcom County Poultry Association Saturday evening at Laurel high school auditorium. Mrs. George R. Shoup of the Puya llup Experiment Station will also speak. All poultrymen invited to attend.
Ralph Baldwin purchases Lynden Cafe fixtures and equipment from William McDonnell via William A. Bauman. He will reopen the cafe Saturday morning under new management and operate it alongside his confectionery store with promised improvements, better service, and moderate prices.
Peter Duis of the Netherlands bulb farms visited Lynden this week. An uncle of Mr Duis who died here years ago is buried in Monumenta Cemetery.
Family and Miss Jennie Wascher of Seattle spent Sunday in Nooksack with their sister Mrs Bays. Mrs Archie Palmer visited Mrs John Swope Tuesday afternoon.
