A state measure to curb fake stock sales would create a state securities department led by a commissioner in Olympia with possible Seattle or Spokane offices. Brokers must obtain a certificate, firms submit financials and descriptions, and securities need commissioner approval before sale to protect investors.
Six week courses in Dairy Farming and Poultry Management are offered to farmers of the Lynden district by the Western Washington Experiment Station at Puyallup. The annual Farmers Winter School opens January 3 and lasts six weeks. One week courses begin January 17 and January 24 in Berry Growing and Tree Fruit Growing. Mr and Mrs John Bajema and baby traveled to Seattle on Monday to attend the marriage of Mrs Bajemas cousin Miss Ossewaarde to Henry Hofman of Oak Harbor. Hofman is Teunis Hofman s brother from Lynden.
Lynden hems posted a strong opening in the Western Washington Experiment Station egg contest at Puyallup. Harry Walters pen of White Leghorns ranked 15th with 104 eggs, just ahead of Earl Craine, while Ray Slade’s pen stood 25th with 95 eggs. There are 79 entries from British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and California. Feed costs for November averaged per pen six birds: Americans 1.624 dollars per pen or 0.271 per bird, Mediterraneans 1.506 dollars per pen or 0.251 per bird, with about 12 pounds straw per pen monthly.
The Pythian Sisters elected a new corps of officers this month with Mrs. August Klocke as Most Excellent Chief and Mrs. B V Mounter as Most Excellent Senior. Others named include Mrs. Harry Mock as Most Excellent Junior and Mrs. Harvey Boysen as Manager.
Harvey Slade announces Lynden Lodge will provide a Big Brother program for State College students via a Pullman Knights of Pythias committee. The panel, with members from educational religious legal and business sectors, will advise and assist students and their families upon request. Parents and relatives should send names of interested students to the Pullman chancellor commander.
Dr L J Covington from Washington Children's Home urged students to fundraise for the home during Monday assembly. Sophomores won candy prizes last Wednesday. Alberta Le Compte earned best song and William Gorseman best yell. Seniors received class rings S H S with signet and ae Po numerals. Seniors and Freshmen beat Juniors and Sophomores in preliminary games and will contest for the championship. The Senior English class reads Tale of Two Cities. Arthur Meenk made a Seattle business trip. Mrs Meenk stayed at the J Meenk home.
A Whatcom County grand jury will begin sessions Tuesday to investigate bootlegging and liquor traffic. Judge Pemberton and Hardin issued the order. Special prosecutor W. H. Abbott cannot serve. another attorney will be named. Lynden district names drawn include Sam Stuurmans and Mrs Bertha Kittle among others.
Lynden Soldiers and Sailors will entertain Lynden children on Christmas morning at 10 o'clock in the Liberty Theater. The free public Christmas Tree event invites all Lynden kids under twelve with a Christmas treat provided. Liberty Theater manager Jack Kauffman cooperates and will show a two reel comedy "Edgar Camps Out" from Booth Tarkington.
Due to a 1919 legislature reform taxing on 50 percent of actual valuation, Lynden and area townships will pay more to the county treasurer next spring. County valuation rises to 35 541 567 but levies shift. Lynden’s 20 mill levy yields 11 241 78, up from 7 825 67 last year, with other townships also increasing their sums.
Lyndon will host two lyceum events next week with Marshall Louis Mertins presenting The Foot of the Rainbow at the high school Monday evening and The De Mille Male Quartet, famed Canadian singers, performing Thursday. Mertins, a clergyman and writer known as The Poet of the Seven Seas, has ties to Kansas City and Nevada Missouri. The De Mille Quartet is a leading American group famed for its platform reputation. Lyceum tickets admit both performances. Miss Lula Erickson visited friends in Bellingham over the weekend.
A A Bauman purchased the tract on Stickney Island from Klaas Kuipers this week. The acquisition includes three and a half sections near Vanderbrink.
Miss Rose Campbell of Wenatchee wed Alfred Moltke of Lynden in Wenatchee on Wednesday. The couple will reside in Wenatchee. Also, Mr and Mrs Matt Meenk and family visited Mrs Hattie Moriva in Bellingham Sunday evening.
Blaine girls edged Lynden 10 to 9 in a tight opener as Lynden dominated possession but fumbled chances. In the nightcap Blaine powered past Lynden 20 to 0 with a late surge after Lynden led midway.
The Lynden schools will close this afternoon and stay closed all next week for the Christmas holidays. Some teachers remain in Lynden while others travel to their homes. Miss Tachel will go to Redlands Washington Miss Powlinson to Seattle and Miss Van Syckle to Everett.
Lynden Christian School will hold its annual Christmas program Saturday at 2 p m at the Christian Reformed Church. Parents of the children are invited to attend.
Klaas Kuipers this week purchased a residence on Grover Street between 1st and 2nd Streets from A. A. Bauman.
Survey by Maud Wilson shows Washington farm wives perform 34 percent outdoor work 75 percent house work 26 percent record keeping and receive 10 percent of farm income. One day in summer equals fourteen hours toil plus rest. in winter twelve hours with two hours rest. Vacation is common 28.4 percent take 11.4 days. Wages are under 11 percent of farm income. butter poultry and egg monies are limited for most.
The M E Church Sunday School announces a Christmas program to be presented Friday at 8 p.m. with recitations songs and solos by students from multiple classes. Mr and Mrs C E Holmes of South Bend are visiting Lynden while Rev Myron Cooley travels to San Diego for Christmas with his sister Mrs S D Harris.
Washington State College beats Lynden 41 38 after a 36 36 tie at the local gym. Lynden led by eight in the second half but W S C rallied to win in overtime as 400 fans witnessed one of the town’s closest contests.
