28 Boys Rescued as Ship Sinks Off Sault Ste. Marie
In Sault Ste. Marie Sept 1 the training ship By Gar capsized after running aground in the St Marys river. Twenty eight Detroit sea scouts and Captain Dean T L Smith were rescued by the Moon Island coast guard. Seaman Henry Tandy saved the captain and several scouts as the overturned vessel floated on the bar. No one was hurt. The crew spent the night at a lumber mill before heading to Detroit.
