A 1967 Ludington High School graduate he earned a B S in aeronautical engineering at the University of Michigan and was commissioned in 1971 through the ROTC program.

The American Association of Junior Colleges reports that during 1970 71 two year community colleges in the United States enrolled about 2.4 million students, up 10 percent from the prior year. The rise followed the opening of 35 new colleges and includes Michigan colleges with 77,000 students. West Shore Community College opened in 1969 and enrolled its first sophomore class this past fall amid broader expansion of career education programs.
