Win Schallert of the Timber Trails Council told the Ludington Optimist Club that a recent Scout Camporee in Oceana County near Elbridge School site four miles south featured Camp Houk the former reunion grounds donated by Hart men. The 4 acre site once housed a Civil War veterans camp and a dance hall, a lumber mill, and a fruit and berry farm. Scouts found relics including old coins bottles beer labels railroad spikes harness rings buckles and other artifacts from the long history of the area.

Four Injured In Weekday Car Collisions In Ludington
Four people were injured in a two car crash at 9 45 a m Tuesday at Franklin and Diana. John Lenz 46 and Irene Lenz 37 of Ludington were treated at a doctor s office. Ginger Vorac 17 of 1278 Debayy Drive was treated and released at Memorial Hospital. Jolene Comstock a passenger sustained minor injuries. Lenz was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Vorac also faced a ticket for no operator s license. Minor damage occurred in a parking lot crash at 4 10 p m in the 100 block of West Ludington Avenue involving Marsha Smith and Eugene Danielson with no tickets issued. Steering failure sent Dorothy Gutowski off U S 10 injuring shrubs and vehicle with no tickets. Moderate damage occurred on North Lakeshore Drive as Helen Lee and Clarence Wheaton collided after Lee slowed for a bicyclist. Wheaton received a following too close ticket.

Hackert dies at 76 after Mason County life
Fred E. Hackert 76 of Ludington route 2 died Tuesday morning at Memorial Hospital of Mason County after a nine day stay. Born June 20, 1895 in Mason County he worked as a concrete and masonry contractor and later as a steam engineer for Manistee Drop Forge Corp. He married Lillian Paulsen on June 20, 1932. Surviving are his wife, daughter Marie Schrader and five sons Lorin Fred Erwin Roy Fred and Steven, plus siblings and 17 grandchildren. Funeral is Friday at Dorrell Funeral Home with burial in Rickey Cemetery.

New Federal Meat Program Detects DES Residues
The USDA reports DES residues in two meat samples from a Pueblo dairy cow and a Minnesota steer, with liver levels at 2.85 and 1.1 ppb respectively while no muscle tissue residues were found. Certification lapses trigger seven day hold or retesting. 1.31 percent of 1,378 samples since Jan 8 showed DES positives under a special monitoring program.
