Half the county’s residents are married while many claim exemption. A small number of unrelated people, nicknamed kickers, appear among the population. The report notes very few naturalized residents named Allens in the county.

Sheriff James Wilkins and County Officials juggle postregistration duties as 1572 men aged 21 to 31 registered for war service in Mason County. Of the total, 40 claimed exemption, 658 did not, 62 were aliens, and 1 was an alien enemy. About half the registrants were married, and many cited dependents or disabilities. Leonard Bunce of Lakeview led with 26 points, while Ricklefs and Vogel of Longfellow and Ansen of Longfellow also scored high. many event winners listed for Lightweight and Heavyweight classes with Longfellow securing multiple relays and jumps.

Washington June 6 official advices say a U S merchant ship exchanged 60 shots with a German submarine in a running fight of about ninety minutes. The unnamed steamer fired 25 shells to the submarine's 35, with the last shot piercing the U boat as it sank stern up and vanished. The merchantman remained undamaged.
Washington reports incomplete state returns show higher registrations than expected for the war draft, with officials predicting many drawn in weeks. In Detroit four men arrested for conscription violations include two enemy aliens charged with treason. Michigan totals near 350,000 with high exemption claims, while disturbances remain minor.
London reports Field Marshal Haig renewing the offensive with British columns advancing on the western slopes of Greenland Hill and west of Lens. In Vienna officials announce Italy has captured trenches south of Damiano with about 6,500 prisoners taken, noting recent ground gained by Italian forces during their offensive.
Sixteen German planes crossed the North Sea on Tuesday afternoon dropping bombs on small towns in Essex and Kent. Only eleven returned. two were shot down by British fighters. Early reports say two people were killed and 29 injured. British anti aircraft fire and fighter forces attacked the raiders before they could strike widely.
The forecast calls for rain and cooler conditions tonight with Thursday showing a fall southward. Southwest storm warnings are in effect as a broad gale risk develops across the region.

A fifty three commanderies parade with 300 musicians and 10000 white plumed knights accompanied massed bands singing Onward Christian Soldiers as the sun broke through clouds. Mark Norris of Grand Rapids is favored to be elected grand commander next year. Bruce Moore emerges as a strong candidate for grand warden with support growing for a Templar leadership change in Michigan.
A United Press dispatch reports Detroit subscribed 5 million to the library fund, boosting total bonds to 62 million. A recent meeting featured plans and remarks by leading city figures as residents discussed public funding and community improvements.
