Mary Martha circle holds final meeting at Brownie Cottage

The Mary and Martha circle of The Community church held its final meeting of the year with a potluck supper at Brownie Cottage, South Bayou Hamlin Lake. Miss Xenia Mason led in the president’s absence, and the devotion featured A Better Understanding of the Lord’s Prayer. The treasurer reported well and the rummage sale was planned for June at The Community Sharmhone. Guests included Mrs. Frank Willard and Mrs. Floyd Currey. An auction followed.

Agnes Hansen Named to Evanston College Honor Court

Agnes Hansen daughter of Mr and Mrs I E Hansen of 50414 South Washington avenue was chosen by Evanston Collegiate Institute students for the Court of Honor in the outdoor May Pageant on the college campus. The pageant in a Grecian setting highlighted college youth contributions to a larger world. Virginia Payne known as Ma Perkins crowned the Royal Couple. Hansen starred in activities including women’s basketball champions in the first year, sopomore class student council, social activities committee and the Junior College singers.

VFW Post Votes On Poppy Sale Red Cross Aid And Stickers

J Alfred Johnson presided over Leveaux Post No. 2409 regular meeting at the Veterans home on North Rowe street. The post accepted James V. Murphy’s transfer from Post 3209 Penahas Township and noted Lynn Beadle of Crystal Valley was recalled to active US Navy duty. A Buddy Pappy committee report covered the May 25 poppy sale. $5 was approved for the American Red Cross war relief drive. The group also authorized purchase of 200 wind shield stickers from the Western Michigan Counties council to be distributed in the Seventh district. Stickers reading Beware of reign War Propaganda encourage independent news evaluation.

Miss Sylvia Benson delivered an exceptional piano recital at Community church on Tuesday evening. An attentive audience applauded her technical command across Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, and Mozart works, with standout Bach and Nocturne passages, under teacher Ernst Lind Johnson.

Troop 4 Enjoys Overnight Hike

Ludington Boy Scout Troop 4 sponsored by Pere Marquette council No. 1492 enjoyed an overnight camping trip on the Pere Marquette river. Rain teased but cleared to allow camp setup, cooking, singing, a tracking test, swimming, and nature study. Mr Sobienski hosted at his farm with a dairy herd and a curious raccoon.

Gay Luncheon Follows Recital at Community Church

Mr and Mrs Carlton Benson hosted a small gathering after a recital by Miss Sylvia Benson at The Community Church on Tuesday evening. Attendees included Vera Hansen Margaret Peterson George Hansen Arne Anderson Hans Hansen Harold Fetters and the Benson family plus ushers.

VFW Auxiliary Conducts Service

The regular meeting of Leveaux post 2409 Ladies Auxiliary met at 106 North Rowe. President Mrs. Tarr led a memorial service for four members and soloist Mrs. Hocking performed Nearer My God to Thee. The group approved a $5 donation to Red Cross war relief and sent cigarettes to Chester Lynch in Wood Wisconsin Hospital.

Commencement Held for Custer Seniors

Custer gymnasium was filled Friday evening May 31 for the senior commencement at Custer high school. The program opened with a duet by Gloria Foster and Mrs. Ross Hedrick. Junior class members formed a colorfully dressed procession while the seniors in caps and gowns took their places on the platform amid bouquets. Hugh Skaggs delivered the Salutatory urging graduates to seize high school gains and serve the community. Gloria Foster followed with a clarinet solo Gypsy Love Song. Maude Powers and Helen Baibak presented the class history and song Night So Fair.

Custer High School Honors Seniors At Commencement

Anita Wonnera could not deliver the class prophecy due to illness. Helen Baibak read it instead. Superintendent B T Hachmuth awarded diplomas and prizes while urging support for the school. Alice Johnson valedictorian received a loving cup and a year’s Readers Digest subscription. Elanneth Goff and Maude Powers earned top honors in all around boy and music respectively. The ceremony featured remarks on living well, with valedictory by Alice Johnson and benediction by Rev William Viesnoraitis. Senior members included Alice Johnson and 19 others, with juniors listed among the attendees.
