The Navy marks a week since Scorpion and its 99 crew vanished during a 2400 mile Azores voyage. Pargot and rescue ship Sunbird search shallow continental shelf areas while destroyers and submarines sweep the route for debris and signs of a sinking.
Paris. Premier Georges Pompidou asked French voters to choose in the June 23 parliamentary elections between totalitarian communism and republic values. He urged quick settlement of crippling strikes costing about 6 percent of GNP, and urged students to leave seized universities.
A U S Air Force F4C Phantom crashed into a partially completed six story building at Kyushu University in Fukuoka Japan. Both crewmen Lt Col Russell F Crutchlow and Maj Ernest E Johnson parachuted to safety. No casualties reported as 30 fire engines fought the blaze while about 1000 students chanted Yankee go home.
UPI reports Hubert H. Humphrey backers claim 67 of Michigan's 102 national convention delegates as campaigning at the state party gathering intensifies. Kennedy and McCarthy camps doubt the tally, noting many delegates remain unpledged or loaned, while the MCCD accuses party officers of bias toward Humphrey.
United Press International reports 31 deaths in Michigan during the Memorial Day period, part of a national near 600 traffic toll. The 102 hour span saw 572 traffic fatalities nationwide with California leading at 54. Michigan’s weekend fatalities included multiple head-on crashes in Oakland County and near Waterford, plus deaths in Detroit area districts.
Seven South Vietnamese officials were killed and several wounded when U.S. helicopter shells misfired during a Saigon operation. The incident, part of a string of accidents this month, occurred as gunships targeted Viet Cong remnants in Cholon. A Buddhist temple and a school serving as an operations post were also hit, with civilian casualties reported.
A Ludington Area Chamber Eye-Opener Breakfast and membership meeting is set for Thursday at 8 a.m. in the National Bank of Ludington. The program includes a by-laws amendment discussion, a school millage explanation by Donald Baldwin, and a talk on anti poverty programs by L Larry Johnson of NORCAP with Mt. Pleasant staff.
SCOTTVILLE Dr. Fred J. Vescolani of Michigan State University will give the commencement address at Mason County Central high school Arnold O. Carlson auditorium during Thursday graduation ceremonies. He holds degrees from St Norbert College Michigan State University and Columbia University and has taught and served as a superintendent and professor. He has written articles and served on editorial boards and sabbatical in 1964.
A gas-fired drying unit exploded at J.P. Stevens Co textile plant in Clemson early today. Three men died and about a dozen were injured, including an electrician who was repairing the unit. The blast ripped a 40-foot roof hole, blew out a brick wall, wrecked equipment, and sent glass across the room. The plant employs 2,200 workers producing synthetic fibers for rugs.
A large bloc within Michigan leans toward vice president Humphrey as delegates shift under pressure. Rep James O Hara said 67 of 102 delegates favored Humphrey while 19 backed Kennedy and 12 were undecided, though Kennedy supporters disputed the tally. Merrill claimed 52 Kennedy and 48 Humphrey with two for McCarthy.
Stanley Jansen of route 1 Ludington filed his nominating petition this morning to enter the Republican primary for sheriff. The election is Aug 6 with the filing deadline for county and state offices set for Tuesday, June 18.
Ludington police investigate a breaking and entering at the Snack Bar 601 N Washington Ave discovered at 3 17 am Sunday. Entry was gained by prying a window and some change is missing while a stock inventory is taken to determine other items stolen.
Lansing UPI Attorney General Frank J. Kelley ruled that township supervisors or city council members cannot serve simultaneously on the county board of supervisors. The opinion cites McDonough v Roach and notes such offices are incompatible. City representatives on boards may continue until new county supervisors take office in 1968.
Tropical storm Abby with 50 mph winds nears the Florida Keys as forecasters warn of possible hurricane strength by late today. Gale warnings cover the peninsula south of Tampa Bay while small craft are urged to seek harbor. Abby centers about 150 miles southwest of Key West moving northeast at 10 mph.
Police hunt two convicts Jack Partee 41 of Fife Lake and William Chamberlain 18 of South Haven who beat a deputy with an iron pipe, tied him, and stole two guns and a cash box after escaping from Wexford County jail. Aiding agencies include Grand Traverse Missaukee counties and State Police Cadillac Traverse City posts.
