Fire Breaks Out Aboard Saratoga

Norfolk Va AP fire broke out on the aircraft carrier Saratoga during a routine overhaul at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. No injuries reported. Navy officials said the blaze was brought under control before midnight and may have caused major damage to the area between the flight deck and hangar deck while a smaller crew was aboard. An immediate investigation into the cause was begun.

Opening day crowds mark first Texas fair with lively exhibits

Attendance matched a historic first Saturday opening at the Amarillo fair as 13 780 turnedstiles counted by fair officials, with 2 179 fans at a show in Tubbook Nistor and a full carnival midway. The event featured fiddling contests, artisans, poultry and fish displays, Army Pershing rocket, and a busy midway with food rows and craft booths. Gates opened at 1 PM with plans for more exhibits and competitions through the day.

Med School Unit To Be 'Whopper' By Eugene Smith

A massive Texas Tech University medical school building rises from a nine acre site near 4th Street and Indiana Avenue. The 825000 square foot structure uses 18 million pounds of steel and a vast glass curtain wall. Five Die in Laredo House Fire Smoke Inhalation

Five people died of smoke inhalation in a dawn fire in Laredo Texas Captain Mike Perez Jr said the victims had no burns. The blaze may have started from a cigarette. Surviving Raquel Garza escaped with minor injuries. The dead include Aseneth Martinez 23 her sons Juan Martinez 5 Alfredo Martinez 24 George Garza 4 and an unidentified woman.

Runway Work Looms At Lubbock Regional Airport

A consulting engineer from Parrill Smith and Cooper says one of Lubbock Regional Airport's two runways will need strengthening or be shut within 18 months. Funds exist for repairs but must be reallocated from 1970 bond plans. The north-south runway could be upgraded in about three years, while the east-west runway is under ongoing daily checks.
