City Council Debates Speed Zone Changes and Left Turn Proposals

Seven Soldiers Killed 14 Wounded in Minefield Accident Near Saigon

Seven American troops were killed and 14 wounded Thursday when a minefield protecting a U S Army base 35 miles north of Saigon was triggered by a soldier. Rescue efforts caused additional mines to explode, killing six more and wounding others. In air action, U S pilots hit Communist targets in North Vietnam, with MIG activity reported as high on Wednesday. In South Vietnam fighting continued near the DMZ as Marines advanced. Defoliation planes operated south of the DMZ, while U S casualties for the week rose to 5,160 killed and 583 wounded. A U S Navy minesweeper was shelled near Long Tao River causing heavy casualties.

U S Puts Peace Plan to Hanoi at United Nations

The United States proposed a phased supervised military withdrawal from South Vietnam as a prelude to ending the war and a halt to bombing of the north. Ambassador Goldberg urged North Vietnam to agree to de escalation and a timetable for withdrawal of all external forces. The plan aimed to secure peace in Southeast Asia with flexible proposals and no inflexible stance.
