U S scientists battled to stabilize the Surveyor 2 spacecraft in a bid to prevent a crash landing on the moon. Despite repeated attempts to ignite the No 3 vernier engine, the craft tumbled toward an 8 53 p m PDT lunar impact with tests run hourly to avoid power drain or mechanical damage.
Texas water planners will reassess transporting water from East Texas to the arid west to address criticism of the statewide plan. In Washington the House approved 200000 dollars for a preliminary study of bringing additional water into the High Plains, led by Rep. George Mahon.
Civic council faces a 48 item agenda at 10 a m today. Joe Moore says the Water Development Board will review summer hearing criticisms of the 3.7 billion plan. Four water sources from Sulphur Cypress Lower Red and possibly upper Sabine basins to be studied.
President Johnson announced Katzenbach will leave the Justice Office for No. 2 at the State Department with a $5,000 salary cut. He named Yale Law’s Eugene Rostow to an undersecretary post and Foy Kohler as deputy undersecretary. Johnson did not decide on a new attorney general or Kohler’s replacement in Moscow.
Chrysler Corp announced 1967 model price increases averaging 92 per car, with some models costing up to 359 more due to standardizing safety and luxury options. Ford had already hiked prices about 25 to 25 per car, while United Auto Workers chief Walter Reuther criticized Ford’s move and urged GM and Chrysler to resist.
Mrs. R C Campbell told about the tithe movement started by Dr Campbell as part of a church anniversary program at First Baptist Church. About 375 attendees heard how the movement grew across the Southern Baptist Convention and roughly half a million copies of the book Gods Plan were distributed. A cost analysis is pending before an advisory group makes a route recommendation to city, county, state, and federal officials.
A report discusses an expressway route near a major corridor, noting a preferred route along with widening existing north-south arteries at one mile intervals. One way designations may factor into final recommendations and the general route could shift two or three blocks. See EXPRESSWAY Page 18.
An Australian National Airways Viscount airliner with 23 aboard crashed near Winton 700 miles northwest of Brisbane. Police feared no survivors among 19 passengers and four crew. Civil Aviation officials announced the crash as the plane reported engine trouble en route to Brisbane from Mount Isa and diverted to Winton for an emergency landing.
Texas Tech increases entry station hours to 7 15 a m to 11 5 15 p m on weekdays and 1 15 a m Saturdays and adds a new station at N Boston near the textile engineering building. Four existing sites remain, with two moved closer to campus perimeter.
U S Air Force pilots shot down two Communist MIGs and damaged three more in large scale air battles over MIG Alley near Hanoi. Thunderchiefs fought in at least seven encounters with missiles and 20 mm cannons, boosting U S total MiG kills to 20 with no U S losses reported. Marines pressed North Vietnamese troops 10 miles northwest of Dong Ha as defoliation begins in the southern zone with C122 Providers.
President Johnson announces General Nicholas deBelleville Katzenbach will resign as attorney general to become undersecretary of state. Details provided in Col. 3 AP Wirephoto report.
The House approved a reserve bill of rights 352 to 6 to permit the president to mobilize up to 198,000 reservists and National Guardsmen alongside draftees. The measure, added after Senate protests, targets about 133,000 short active duty veterans and 65,000 nonmembers with incomplete reserve obligations.
Police in Kenilworth report an unidentified fingerprint on a door at the Charles H. H. Percy home as investigators continue the search for a killer in Valerie Percy’s bludgeon death. Federal and local agencies join a nationwide appeal for clues and fingerprints from similar crimes.
