Joe Melvin Allard 22 of Lockney Floyd County is charged with the Aug 23 rape murder of Hazel Wofford 44 of Lockney. He waived an examination and bail was denied. The case to go before Floyd County grand jury Oct 11 with a possible trial in November or December.
City Council votes to allow angle parking in parts of downtown for a mid October trial. The plan, urged by J B Hance, directs the traffic department to select locations and costs for the October 1 meeting review.
Lubbock investors D G Kirkland and Jim Stalder plan a 14 story luxury building at 27th St and Ave Q. Construction to start by December 1 with completion in early 1967. Two workmen were injured at Dryden as windmills autos and railroad cars overturned and the Dryden Mercantile Co suffered major damage. The extent at Langtry was not known.
In a dawn shootout near Snyder two men died Carlos Perez of Colorado City and Deputy Sheriff Jesse Minton of Snyder. Deputy Forrest Smith of Colorado City was wounded, later listed in serious condition after head injuries from the exchange with the suspect Perez who was being sought for questioning in a Monday night slaying. Smith remained in intensive care after surgery in Abilene.
EW DELHI reports a potential easing of India Red China tensions as Peking Radio says Indian troops crossed into Chinese held Tibet and withdrew from 56 outposts after a 12:30 p.m. CST deadline. The U N Security Council pressed for a cease fire in the India Pakistan clash with possible penalties.
U S planes suffered heavy losses on Monday with eight aircraft lost and one pilot killed while two captured including an Air Force captain. four crewmen survived a helicopter downing during a rescue mission. Air strikes continued Tuesday as B52s hit targets in North and South Viet Nam. In An Khe area the 101st Airborne Brigade finished Operation Gibraltar with 226 Viet Cong killed over 11 days. Opium caches found near a Viet Cong stronghold sparked questions about morale and conditions.
Capt Edgar Lee Hawkins 36 year old U S Air Force pilot from Lamesa is reported missing in flight after an operational mission in Viet Nam. He was trained as a fighter pilot, is a 1951 Iron Tech graduate with an agronomy degree, and played end for the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes. He last was stationed on Okinawa and went to Viet Nam in August 1964.
The Dominican Revolutionary Party said on Tuesday that former president Juan Bosch would return to Santo Domingo on Saturday to seek backing for his presidential bid.
