Plains Textiles Inc plans a 750000 investment for a five acre Loop 289 east site with work starting now and full production by January. The plant will employ up to 65 people, operate three shifts, and spin about 60000 pounds of yarn weekly from High Plains cotton. Charles Wilson, Tech graduate and former West Point Pepperell manager, will head operations. The project ties to Arrowhead Yarn Mills also starting limited production nearby.
2nd Lt Edward Harold Fox of Plainview was killed in action in Viet Nam. A member of the 11th Airborne Division he died after only two months in country. He was 22, a Plainview High School graduate who worked at the Plainview Daily Herald and attended West Texas State University. He is survived by his parents and two sisters. The body was due to arrive within 10 days. Funeral arrangements were to be announced.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain hit the South Plains causing scattered damage as Lubbock and nearby towns reported totals up to 5.38 inches for the four day siege. Lockney received 2.50 inches with other areas like Levelland Spur Floydada Plainview Midland Odessa posting lighter sums. No major crop damage noted as officials signaled the end of the downpours.
Lubbock attorney Edwin H. Boedeker accepts congratulations from County Judge Rod Shaw after being named judge of County Court at Law No. 1 by the County Commissioners Court at a special meeting held Monday.
Scott of San Antonio named to command pilot the next Gemini 8 flight to conduct a space walk lasting about 100 minutes. Armstrong to pilot during a two to three day mission with a first civilian astronaut in a historic national display. The walk involves tethered steps beyond the capsule using zot propulsion and long-life oxygen supply as guides, with a target flight next February or March. Space agency officials note the mission will orbit Earth at least once.
Prime Minister Shastri charged China fired first shots across the Indian frontier to dominate Asia and India would fight back. China protested frontier violations by Indian troops and announced militia combat readiness. The UN Security Council urged a cease fire between India and Pakistan, with New Delhi agreeing to heed the call and a session set by Wednesday.
Seventeen year old Tessa Tracy known as a born malapropist has her sayings collected and published by The Santa Barbara News Press through her father Arthur Park Tracy head of the papers proofreading. Family and friends describe her as a contrast of gaiety and philosophy with interests in surfing tennis ballet painting and drawing.
Edwin H. Boedeker, 57, appointed by the Lubbock County Commissioners Court to fill the vacancy in County Court-at-Law No. 1 after James A. Ellis resigned to join the 137th District Court. Boedeker has practiced law in Lubbock since 1947 and previously served as interim judge multiple times. he also held six years as Dickens County judge. He has resided in Lubbock since 1917.
Boedeker unanimously approved by the Lubbock County Bar Association to fill the vacancy left by Judge Ellis. He is expected to assume duties around October 1 after finalizing personal matters and business in order. Commissioners noted the pool of strong candidates and discussed the search in recent months.
Interested persons to file applications to be considered for the vacancy. The third applicant was L Brann of 2921st St. and Bodecker filed his application.
Tropical Storm Carol strengthened into a hurricane well into the Atlantic. At 2 p.m. it was about 1,600 miles east of San Juan and 2,600 miles east-southeast of Miami with top winds around 80 to 100 mph and forward speed of 10 mph.
