Suez convoy plan tests canal passage amid boycott threat

Western Big Three propose sending a guinea pig convoy through the Suez to test passage by Nasser. If refused, a canal boycott by major maritime nations could widen an economic squeeze on Egypt. Dulles says the U S will lend Western Europe money to buy oil if Suez use becomes impractical. Acceptances come from 17 of 18 invited nations. Ethiopia yet to respond. Spain accepts. The issue may be referred to the UN Security Council if Nasser refuses the test convoy.

Plane Ditches Near Guam. 18 Crew Saved In Pacific

A four engine Navy Constellation ditched 106 miles south of Guam. All 18 crewmen were rescued from life rafts with two minor injuries. The crash followed two engine failures on a weather reconnaissance mission from Guam. Crew members were rescued by rescue planes and a surface craft and flown to Agana or returned to the Pacific.

Racial tension eases as Negro students leave Clay School

In Clay Kentucky the consolidation school faced a boycott as four Negro students were barred and white pupils returned after a county board order. About 150 of 590 white students went back to class while NAACP lawyers prepared a federal suit for reinstatement. Some families planned no immediate changes though others planned September enrollment in different schools.

Navy unveils first full size model of manmade satellite

The Navy shows a 20 inch silver sphere with a four aerial picket fence at the Instrument Society of America meeting in New York. The model weighs about 21 pounds and includes instruments and gauges for the space project to be launched during the 1957 International Geophysical Year.

Merry-Go-Round For Tech Freshmen To Continue Today

Texas Tech welcomed about 2000 entering freshmen to a second day of mass meetings tests and advice. By end of first day 1866 freshmen had signed up for classes bringing total freshmen on campus to 2708 including summer pre tests. A reception in the Student Union introduced newcomers to peers and staff as they begin Tech life.

Crash Second For 8 Million Global Giants

A B 52 jet bomber returning to base burst into flames at 3000 feet and crashed near Route 99 nine miles southeast of Madera California. Four bodies were recovered with one missing. two crew survived and were hospitalized. The crash damaged traffic on the four lane expressway and killed no one on the ground.

Child Killed In Driveway Accident In Lubbock

One year old Christy Tann McClain died after being struck by a milk truck in her driveway at 12 31 pm. Fred McClain and wife Meo resided at 008 24th Street. Driver Clovis Lawrence Shirley 26 delivered milk and did not realize Christy was behind the vehicle. Santa Fe official Dave Tipple reported on the first day of ticket sales for the Texas Tech versus Texas A&M Cotton Bowl game in Dallas.
