A sprawling thunderstorm over the South Plains produced sporadic rains and light totals, with Lubbock reporting limited moisture. Temperatures peaked near 106 in Seymour while East Texas saw little benefit as the storm failed to meet expectations. Police logged 17 accidents in Lubbock from 3 p.m. to midnight amid the unsettled weather.

Monterey Student Is Victim In Fatal Crash
Jimmy D. Ransom 16 a Monterey High School standout and athlete died after a collision at a no traffic control intersection on Canton Ave near 65th St. The crash also involved Murry Mattox Jr. who was treated for shock. Ransom was thrown onto the curb and into the path of the other car. The incident marked the ninth traffic fatality in the city that year and the eighth on the South Plains region.
