Severe Korea Storm Leaves Hundreds Dead Missing

A powerful rainstorm battering Korea caused at least 403 deaths or disappearances, with Seoul reporting 195 fatalities and Kyonggi and neighboring provinces hit hard. The disaster damaged over 1,000 buildings, flooded 5,600 homes, left thousands homeless, and prompted emergency relief by President Park and U. S. Army helicopters evacuating stranded residents.

Teen Art Hoax Foisted in Lincoln Gallery Scene

A Lincoln teenager allegedly forged an abstract painting and hid it among Sheldon Art Gallery’s works for more than two days. Gallery director Norman A. Geske uncovered the deception as authorities suspect a 19-year-old boy painted the piece and used a wheelchair to pose as a cripple.

Three Women Die as Amarillo Crash Kills Four More

Five U S Soldiers Rescue Refugee Under Heavy Berlin Fire

U S soldiers braved Communist gunfire to free a wounded refugee from East Berlin. Spec 4 Hans W Puhl acted as a one man army, after disarming two border police with a tear gas grenade, then led the rope lift over the wall. The refugee Michael Meyer was wounded five times and hospitalized in West Berlin. five American soldiers survived unharmed.

Tropical Storm Dora Devastates Carolinas Weathers Atlantic

Dora churned from the Carolinas to the open sea causing mass homelessness and at least six deaths. Coast guard crews fought 13 foot seas with a burned out freighter in tow while Gladys and Ethel loom in the Atlantic. Florida and Georgia reel from Dora’s backwash as Live Oak and Jacksonville Beach suffer flood damage and evacuations continue.

Rain-slick streets injure sixteen in city wide crashes

A series of crashes on rain slick streets injure sixteen people across Lubbock Crosbyton and nearby areas. In Crosby County a pickup driven by McCauley overturned near Crosbyton injuring Lars Flyay McKinley and Terry Gardner Kelly. Two other drivers fled a hit and run after crashing into a utility pole east of Lubbock.

City gets light rains soak South Plains area

Blanket of soaking rains dampened the South Plains early Sunday as a cool front lingered over the north. Lubbock reported 0.25 to 1 inch statewide, with Anton 0.60 and Slaton 0.50. Matador and Ralls logged about 0.40, while most areas saw at least 0.25 inches.

Cotton Seen As Weapon In War On Poverty

Frederick H. Heidelberg of Raleigh urged President Johnson to use surplus cotton in poverty programs. He proposed melding government held cotton into mattress projects under the economic opportunities act and supplying textiles to assist less fortunate families. Upland cotton carryover Aug 1 stood at 12.2 million bales, with about eight million held by the CCC and 4.2 million in private trade.
