U.S. job data show total employment at 68,282,000 a drop of 407,000 from July while unemployment falls to 3,788,000. The unemployment rate climbs from 5.4 to 5.9 percent as seasonal factors temper but do not fully lift the labor market.
Ridges battle mud and slick fields as Jarly fall rains exceed 3 inches in spots across the South Plains. The heaviest rainfall was near Floydada Plainview and Silverton with muddy gridirons reported statewide. A diffuse cold front stretched from North Texas toward the Big Bend while losing punch downstate Friday night.
The Panhandle and South Plains face blanket weather down to near 55 degrees before dawn with scattered showers across Texas. Lubbock reports drizzling rain overnight and a break in the wet, as temperatures rise to the mid and high fifties with variable rainfall measurements ranging from .21 to 1.50 inches reported from multiple spots.
Hurricane Donna battered the Florida Keys with 110 mph winds and threatened both coasts as it turned northward. A 19 year old, Jerry Peeples, died when his car crashed on a storm swept road near Homestead. Weather warnings extended from Fort Lauderdale to Melbourne and from Punta Gorda to Clearwater as the storm neared Everglades and Naples.
Mickey Thompson of El Monte California drove Challenger I to 406.6 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats Utah but mechanical trouble halted the required second return run, leaving Sir John Cobb’s 1947 403.135 mph two way record intact. Thompson vowed to return as Donald Campbell prepares to challenge next week.
A barn belonging to farmer Leo Hendricks in Little Chute Wisconsin burned Thursday night as he was away at a volunteer firemen s meeting. No injuries reported and cause under investigation.

Bonn talks among U S British and French ambassadors and West German representatives may lead to a protest to Moscow. Officials weigh countermeasures such as restricting trade. Grewe deems move part of Reds’ slow strangulation strategy and notes Herter agrees action is needed.
Otie Keels, owner of the 8th Street Grocery at 2023 South Street, reports two Black men slipped in Friday afternoon, distracting him with a Bologna purchase while they lifted a bank bag containing at least $100 in cash and about $500 in checks. He found $22 scattered behind the counter. The incident occurred around 5 10 p.m. with one man entering a few minutes before the other. The men browsed the store as customers shopped. United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold urged continued UN action in the Congo after citing chaos and a political feud between Prime Minister Lumumba and President Kasavubu. He warned the army is out of control and questioned whether UN forces should surrender control of airfields and radio stations.
Fire erupted at the Gulf Oil refinery in south Philadelphia Friday night. Officials reported three oil tanks burning and fifteen others in danger as fireboats chemical units and hospital crews converged on the scene. No injuries were reported.

Eastern New Mexico University regents announced a 2-2 split verdict on Dr. D. H. Reed after an eight hour hearing. H. C. Parnell and Virginia McElhaney voted guilty while T. E. Mears Jr. and F. D. Stout voted not guilty. Reed said I am vindicated as Parnell called the decision administrative. President Donald Moyer declined comment.
