Wealthy El Paso Woman Slain in Airport Car Trunk

Ruth Holland a 64 year old El Paso widow and former racing figure was found beaten to death wed at El Paso International Airport. Her home was ransacked and a potential suspect seen leaving the scene. Jewelry including two diamond rings vanished as investigators pieced clues.

Carr launches Senate bid in Lubbock rally

Atty Gen Waggoner Carr formally opened his campaign for the U S Senate in a Lubbock Coliseum rally before about 2 000 people. He challenged Republican Sen John Tower and urged bold leadership for Texas while pledging support for federal defense and research spending and calling for enforcement of laws. He cited water, urban growth and brackish groundwater research as key issues and said cooperation with federal and state officials is essential.

Grand Jury indicts 34 in district court case load

The district court grand jury returned 34 indictments including assault with intent to murder and robbery by assault. One charge was not indicted and another was sent to the next session. A case by District Atty Alton Griffin was dismissed before presentation. An indictment named Janie Guzman, 36, for the August 9 robbery of R V Hoot at a home on Ave D, with $60 to $65 taken after Hoot was trapped by a knife threat while remodeling schemes were discussed.

House Hearing Warns of Recession Without Rate Cuts

Grenades Rip Into Crowds Across Saigon Campaign

Avalanche Journal wires report a wave of terror as Communists intensify efforts to disrupt elections in Saigon. Grenades hit two crowds wounding five at a Chinese school while a separate blast injured three government troops and two children near central Saigon. A Vietnamese spokesman said fragments show the grenade came from the Soviet Union. A US warehouse fire in the Tent City area caused massive damage estimated at 750 600, blamed on faulty wiring. A bomb scare closed the PX briefly before reopening. Air force F105s hit a North Vietnamese missile site near Vinh as carrier planes attacked another launch area and truck convoys near Thanh Hoa.
