The hurricane Donna battered the Leeward Islands killing seven people as it veered toward a west-northwesterly track. Authorities held out hope it would turn away from the southeastern United States.
A Baylor Medical College student Philip Zeeck 23 and pilot Charlie Martin 40 were rescued after their World War II B 26 ditched 300 miles southwest of Keflavik Air Base Sunday night. They were flying from Greenland to deliver mining explosives when fuel ran low and a weather ship saved them. Zeeck from Plainview Texas confirmed their safety to his parents Monday.
A slight northward shift in the storm Donna reduced its projected path away from the United States. Forecaster Gordon Dunn cautioned no all clear yet, while Puerto Rico faced 125 mph winds and high tides after Donna crossed the Windward Islands, passing 83 miles north of San Juan.

FBI agents arrested Harold Eugene Fields 44 in Schererville Indiana as he parked a stolen 1960 car near a restaurant. Police said the vehicle contained burglary tools dynamite blasting caps a .38 revolver radios wrist watches and 1 011 dollars. Fields had been on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list since May 25.
Three inmates escaped Wynne State Farm near Huntsville on Monday. Two were soon recaptured, leaving 47-year-old Clarence H. Brown still at large. Brown, 1380 years for armed robbery from Bowie, fled with 49-year-old Vasco Carrier serving 99 years for robbery from El Paso and 26-year-old Carlton Pettit serving 17 years for burglary from Nacogdoches.

In Southern California 16 summer cabins near Saugus were evacuated as an 800 acre blaze spread, with 300 firefighters and air bombers aiding. More than 200 firefighters fought a 700 acre Yosemite blaze, as the week end produced nearly 700 small fires statewide from lightning.
