The hurricane Betsy moves westward toward islands and possibly the U.S. mainland with 100 mph winds late Wednesday night. Its northwest course threatens several islands as officials monitor its path.
Pakistani forces swept into Indian held Kashmir posts and fought into night. Air force reportedly shot down four Indian planes and India claimed heavy armor and troops deployed. UN chief Thant urged both sides to stop firing and pull back across the cease fire line.
U S ambassador Arthur J Goldberg urged an immediate cease fire as clashes raged about 90 miles south of Srinagar in Kashmir. India claimed guerrilla incursions began Aug 4 and attacked across the ceasefire line seizing posts at Devaa and Chhamb. Pakistan air force reported opposition losses while New Delhi gave no plane kill count. See PAKISTAN Page 10. Ambareme Gabon Dr Albert Schweitzer, 90, is very ill confinement to his jungle hospital after a fall, a spokesman said. He built a leper hospital in Africa and has long served patients there. White House reports harsh bargaining with the United Steelworkers over wages and pension terms. Moyers says no progress yet as talks extend past night session. Johnson has not participated since the eight day strike extension was set. Industrial offer adjustments remain unconfirmed.
Betsy, packing up to 100 mph winds, moves toward the Bahamas with Grand Turk and Mayaguana on alert. Weather officials expect a northerly turn, threatening center Bahamas and U.S. Atlantic coast while Cape Kennedy prepares rocket and missile tracking stations for possible impact.

In South Viet Nam on Thursday, B52 jet bombers pounded a suspected Viet Cong area about 20 miles northwest of Saigon. A US military spokesman said the raid targeted the Ho Ba wood Da Dinh Datong Province under current security restrictions only a small number of Strategic Air Command crews took part.
