Cameron County grand jury reports 358450 dollars of surplus commodities for the poor are unaccounted for between 1970 and 1973. The panel cites lack of control and oversight by the Cameron County Commissioners Court as the cause, with no indictments issued.
Archibald Cox testified that he may have indirectly caused a New York Times story about President Nixon ordering the Justice Department not to appeal part of the ITT anti trust case. The White House disputed the charge and defended Nixon's actions, while Cox admitted a lapse in confidence and suggested House inquiries into Watergate cooperation. The case later settled out of court.
President Nixon plans to offer Sen. William B. Saxbe of Ohio the job of attorney general. Sources say Saxbe has been sounded out and may require a special Watergate independent prosecutor and full presidential distance before accepting. Saxbe, 57, has criticized Nixon in the past and has said he would discuss the matter with mutual trust and confidence.
A $4,500 bid for a package of park and street improvements in north Lubbock was approved Tuesday by the urban renewal agency's board of commissioners.
The High Plains Underground Water Conservation District sought a 43 250 square foot parcel at the southeast corner of 8th Street and Avenue O near the civic center entrance. The board rejected the request citing urban renewal alignment and offered three similar parcels across 8th Street plus a Plains Cooperative Oil Mill land sale nearby.
In Lubbock most service stations ration gas or shorten hours while Conley's Texaco at Main Street and Avenue Q runs out. An employee said the outage began Monday and hopes a Thursday shipment will restore supplies. Texaco regional distributor Ben Farr said other local stations aren’t completely out, noting the monthy quota system and limited supplies.
A potent cold front moved into the Sout Plains bringing upper 30s temperatures to Lubbock and gusty winds warned for western counties. Forecasters expected a 65 degree high Tuesday, then a drop into the upper 30s, with the day warming to near 70 later. The Dallas area faced heavy rain and flash flood watches and warnings for Dallas and Tarrant counties as four inch downpours and creek rises prompted caution along Bear Creek, Johnson Creek, Village Creek, Walnut Creek, White Rock Creek and Ten Mile Creek. At a fundraising dinner in Austin Dolph Briscoe declared his bid for a second term as Texas governor. He said he would file with the State Democratic Executive Committee in January. Dallas figure Jess Hay and Briscoe campaign staff estimated about 10,000 attendees praising Briscoe’s 1972 victory and support for a four year term.
The White House said President Nixon will meet Israeli Premier Golda Meir after talks with Egyptian acting Foreign Minister Ismail Fahan. Kissinger will travel to the Middle East, Cairo, Jidda, Karachi and other cities en route to Peking. Egypt agreed to exchange wounded POWs with Israel, signaling a hopeful step toward peace. Saudi oil ministers consider another 9 percent cut on Nov 1 to pressure talks. Israel accused Egypt of conditions tied to troop positions.

A 1-year-old Idalou farm boy and a 15-year-old Cooper youth leader were named Gold Star winners at the Land Block County 4-H Club banquet at Vann's Catering Service. About 300 attended as 73 4-H members received honors in 31 categories. Gold Star is the highest county level award. Jay Winter, active in swine, sheep, cotton, grain sorghum, veterinary science, leadership and automotive projects, was unable to attend. Diana Trimble led in livestock shows and judging, reflecting broad 4-H achievement.
