In the South the cotton flow slows to a trickle as farmers rally to hold stock after last week's price collapse. Brokers debate whether withholding will lift prices. some say much of the crop is already sold while others warn of rising farm costs and debt pressures.
An agreement signed Saturday ends the shipping strike on the East and Gulf coasts and governments hope it spurs a West coast settlement. CIO President Philip Murray signals a demand for a healthy wage rise for 900,000 steel workers. Union wage demands spread to coal automobile and meat packing sectors as government ships to resume and 26 days of bottling end.
British troops were sent into Calcutta to quell Hindu Muslim rioting that left at least 26 dead and 50 injured. Police fired on sections of the city as violence, arson, and looting disrupted transport and daily life. The Indian National Ambulance corps rescued nearly 200 people, while Lt. Gen. Bucher announced four battalions and a regiment were deployed for control and convoy protection.
Floydada scene reports Roe Jones a Floyd county wheat and stock farmer is hospitalised in Floydada after a plow accident. He suffered shock and loss of blood with severe cuts. Bob Broadford and Travis Lightfoot rescued him and brought him to the hospital. Condition listed as fair.
Texas survey finds smaller cities easing veteran housing, while large centers face acute shortages. In Dallas about 12,000 veterans with families seek housing as rents run from 20 to 150 dollars monthly. Austin reports 3,600 are homeless now with 6,900 projected by year end 1947 and 1,680 built this year. Many live with relatives, in tourist cabins, trailers, or nearby farms.
The OPA extended the canning sugar stamps No 9 and 10 through November 30, allowing five pounds per stamp. This move, amid maritime strikes causing shortages, follows agreements to shift western beet sugar to eastern deficit areas to ensure households receive their fair share. The regular table sugar stamp No 51 remains valid for five pounds through year end.
President and Mrs Truman spent a quiet weekend traveling to the Catoctin mountains in Western Maryland for an overnight stay at Shangri La the presidential retreat. They arrived with secret service protection shortly after 5 p m and plan to return to the White House after lunch tomorrow following a two hour drive from Washington.

The four power commission reports Goering kept and possibly hid poison in his body or digestive tract while imprisoned. It confirms a poison vial was found in his cell two hours before his scheduled execution and notes no blame on guards. Two letters Goering left in his cell were not released and may relate to the event. Brig. Paton Walsh says Goering appeared calm before death and may have retrieved poison from his body.

Lubbock tied for top in its group with Pampa and Amarillo high schools, while Harvey Pruitt earned a one plus in twirling. Louis Stoelzing directs the Lubbock band with about 20 bands competing.
Police announced arrests of William F. Crutchfield and Dale Hall in connection with the Anderson Bros. jewelry burglary at 1012 Broadway and the July 17 narcotics burglary of Mark Halsey Drug Store at College Ave and Broadway. Two others were held in San Angelo on Lubbock warrants. Extradition expected Monday. About $1,500 in property recovered. Crutchfield and Hall linked to past sentences. Lefty Fowler previously charged in the Anderson case.

James Carter Gammill five died Friday in Denver after being struck by a city owned truck near his home. He attended K. Carter school in Lubbock before the family moved while his father served as a recruiting officer. Funeral services were set for 3 pm at Lubbock First Methodist Church with Dr. H I Robinson officiating.
RAF hero Major Ed Lawson tells of theThirty Seconds Over Tokyo saga during a weekend stop in Lubbock. He and Elmer Tarbox, both veterans of the 341st bombardment group, recalled training at sea level and the Hornet run toward Nippon. The story chronicles the surprise launch from the carrier and the raid that followed.
Rear Admiral C W Styer told the Navy League in Wichita that compact efficient atomic energy plants in submarines would give high submerged speed and almost unlimited cruising range. The atomic firebox would stop oxygen use by propulsion and eliminate exhaust gas disposal, Styer said.
Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey Jr described the atomic bomb as an unholy weapon and urged it be outlawed for now and all time. He spoke to Navy League members during their Navy Day dinner, saying the effort requires the United Nations.
Jules Brulatour, 75, millionaire pioneer of the film industry and husband of actress Hope Hampton, died tonight after a prolonged illness. Brulatour was an executive at Eastman Kodak, and he and his wife were longtime figures at New York theater openings.
