Government asks Supreme Court to uphold Voting Rights Act
The U S government seeks original jurisdiction to test the 1965 Voting Rights Act at the Supreme Court. It asks the court to halt state court delays in Alabama Mississippi and Louisiana that bar registrars from enrolling voters certified by federal examiners. It argues quick action could prevent disenfranchisement ahead of primaries and cites 46 000 eligible voters named by examiners not yet added to state lists.
